Palpalá combines a defining industrial history with urban cultural venues and nearby excursions. When planning a stay, you can focus on these different aspects: the city’s landmarks, cultural programs, or a challenging hike outside the urban area.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Palpalá is accessible via National Route RN 66, a highway. Another access route runs along Provincial Route RP 1 through Río Blanco. The huge Christ monument can be seen from the highway entrance to Palpalá, making it a prominent landmark when you arrive.

Industrial History and Landmarks

Altos Hornos Zapla was a reference point for Palpalá for a long time. In 1945, Altos Hornos Zapla produced pig iron for the first time. The cooling tower of the former plant is a city landmark and makes the industrial past visible in the cityscape. Together, the historic date and the tower’s enduring status as a landmark tell two different sides of the industrial story.

Palpalá’s sculptures include the Escultura del Minero and Plaza de Los Duendes. The Cine Teatro Altos Hornos Zapla is also one of the city’s interesting places. Those interested in the city’s cultural landscape will find, alongside the cooling tower, other named points of interest spanning industrial history, art, and public life.

Cultural Venues and Programs

The Santuario Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Río Blanco y Paypaya is located in Río Blanco, in the Departamento de Palpalá. There is also a monument to Pachamama at the entrance via Río Blanco. Both places add nearby destinations to the city’s attractions, although they are not part of central Palpalá.

As part of the provincial program “La Noche de los Museos” in 2017, sculptors from Palpalá created sculptures live at the Casa de la Historia y la Cultura del Bicentenario in Palpalá. At the Museo Héroes de Malvinas, the program included guided tours, veterans’ accounts of the war, and educational games. The Museo de la Cultura Andina presented traditional items and performances featuring Andean dances. These examples offer a glimpse of the cultural program in 2017; they do not indicate current opening hours or regular repetitions.

Folklore and Local Products

The Patio Criollo del Arrabio is a folklore festival featuring traditional artistic performances and products from local entrepreneurs. On one occasion, the festival was held at Parque de Las Aguas Danzantes at the entrance to Palpalá. Popular artists performed there, and people danced to traditional dances.

Landscape and Excursions

Nearby, the Serranías de Zapla lie within an urban ecological reserve and a Yungas environment. A hike to the summit of Cerro Zapla follows a six-hour round-trip route and is rated as highly difficult. The duration refers to the entire excursion. If you are planning this hike, take the time required and the level of difficulty into account, and check trail conditions and access in advance.

For a cycling excursion, an official loop route runs through Parque de la Memoria to Río Blanco, a locality belonging to Palpalá. Route information may change, so check the latest updates before setting out. The hike and cycling loop offer different ways to explore the area: one is described as a challenging summit hike, the other as a loop route with Río Blanco as its destination.

Palpalá as a Place to Stay

If you are looking for a hotel in Palpalá, let the focus of your trip guide your choice: would you mainly like to explore the city’s industrial history and cultural venues, or also plan an excursion into the surrounding area? The access via RN 66 and the alternative route via RP 1 through Río Blanco offer two different ways to reach Palpalá. When planning your stay, it is also worth treating the six-hour round-trip hike to Cerro Zapla as a separate, challenging activity.
