Chilecito Department: Landscapes, Churches and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Chilecito Department
The Cuesta de Miranda connects Chilecito with Gral. Felipe Varela along a 114-kilometer stretch of Ruta 40. Between narrow, deeply cut rock ravines, views open up across the valley and the Río Miranda. Together with historic churches, wine culture and traces of industry, the route offers a sense of the diverse themes that shape a trip through Chilecito Department.
Landscape and Routes
The Cuesta de Miranda is a long stretch of Ruta 40; the ravines, views across the valley and the Río Miranda are among its distinctive landscape features. The Quebrada del Agua Negra offers a different natural setting: this mountain-surrounded corridor is seven kilometers long and suited to trekking and photo safaris. The two offer different ways to experience the landscape—the route with its rock ravines and views, and a corridor characterized by nature-based activities.
The steps at Cristo del Portezuelo are also a practical point of reference when planning: 200 steps lead to the base. If you include this site, you can factor the number of steps into the time you allow for sightseeing.
Houses, Collections and Archaeological History
In the district of San Miguel stands Samay Huasi, a mansion built in the early 19th century in Chilecito Department. After acquiring it, Joaquín Víctor González renamed it after the Quechua word for “house of rest.” The gardens have their own distinctive features too: Puerta de Micenas includes a gallery with roughly hewn monoliths of the Seven Sages of Greece; there is also a Puerta Etrusca.
Samay Huasi houses a small museum and an archaeological, anthropological and paleontological collection on minerals and natural sciences, including preserved native birds. The Centro de Interpretación Tambería del Inca presents the pre-Hispanic Casa del Inga. It is described as the political, administrative and ceremonial center of Tawantinsuyu, as well as the provincial capital of Kollasuyu. Together, the two sites offer different ways to engage with history and collecting.
Churches and Religious Traditions
The churches of Chilecito Department reflect different historical periods. San Buenaventura in Vichigasta is considered the oldest church in the department and dates to the mid-17th century. It retains its original single-nave layout, with thick adobe walls and a wooden roof of rafters and purlins. Part of the Circuito de las Capillas, it was declared a National Historic Monument under Law 24.852 in 1997.
The history of San Sebastián in Sañogasta also goes back a long way: the first chapel was built in the late 17th century as a family oratory beside the Hacienda de San Sebastián. The church is also part of the Circuito de las Capillas. In Malligasta, the church of the Inmaculada Concepción stands beside the main square and an adjoining cemetery; the surroundings are green and have a colonial character. The church of Santa Rosa de Lima in the district of Anguinán was built in 1784.
The buildings are associated with recurring religious dates. At the church of Santa Rosa de Lima, Santa Rosa is celebrated every year on August 30 with religious festivities; the specific program may vary. The patron saint’s feast of San Buenaventura takes place in Vichigasta on July 14. It includes a procession in which worshippers carry the image on their shoulders. These dates are particularly relevant to your travel plans if you want to experience religious traditions.
Wine and Industrial Heritage
Bodega La Riojana Cooperativa offers a guided tour of its central winery in Chilecito. You can visit the facility, presses and fermentation tanks, and the tour ends with a wine tasting. As visitor information may change, it is advisable to check tour availability in advance.
Industrial history is visible in different forms. The Fundición de Santa Florentina preserves ruins with walls, chimneys and remains of industrial facilities from the early 20th century. Station 2, “El Durazno,” of the Cable Carril, by contrast, has retained its original structure, including the boiler and engine that powered the section between stations 1 and 2. The ruins and preserved machinery offer two different points of interest if you are interested in industrial heritage.
