Discover Puerto Iguazú: City, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Puerto Iguazú
Puerto Iguazú offers travelers a range of experiences: local cuisine, Guaraní culture, wildlife watching and a catamaran route. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing between the city’s attractions and experiences in the broader destination of Departamento Iguazú.
Puerto Iguazú: Getting There and Finding Your Way
The Tancredo Neves International Bridge connects Puerto Iguazú with Foz do Iguaçu and is another prominent landmark for finding your way around.
Cuisine, Culture and Crafts
Hito Tres Fronteras is one of Puerto Iguazú’s tourist attractions. In the broader destination of Departamento Iguazú, you can see the confluence of the Iguazú and Paraná rivers and the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay there. The craft fair, also a tourist attraction, is located right beside Hito. The Museo de Imágenes de la Selva is another of the city’s attractions.
Near Puerto Iguazú, the La Aripuca agro-ecotourism theme park showcases the forest of Misiones and Guaraní culture. There you can see a 17-meter-high replica of a handmade animal trap crafted by Guaraní peoples. It is made from salvaged tree trunks and conveys an ecological message.
In the broader destination of Departamento Iguazú, regional cuisine in Puerto Iguazú often features river fish and grilled meat. Aqva Restaurant serves regional cuisine featuring local fish such as surubim, dourado and pacu.
Birdwatching and Wildlife Rehabilitation
At Jardín de los Picaflores, you can watch free-flying birds. In an environment with native flora, they feed on flowers, fruit and seeds. This makes it possible to observe the birds in connection with their plant surroundings, rather than focusing only on individual species.
The Güira Oga wildlife rehabilitation center is a tourist attraction in Puerto Iguazú. Trails pass through a rescue, rehabilitation and breeding center for endangered birds, mammals and reptiles. This means the center focuses on several animal groups and its work with them.
Catamaran Route from Puerto Iguazú
The Triple Frontier Catamaran Tour departs from the port of Puerto Iguazú and travels to Hito Tres Fronteras. The catamaran passes the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, follows the shore of the Iryapu jungle area and approaches El Santuario, the border of Parque Nacional Iguazú. The route thus connects several notable geographical landmarks without relying on a current timetable.
Experiences in the Broader Destination of Departamento Iguazú
Parque Nacional Iguazú is located in the broader destination of Departamento Iguazú. It was established in 1934 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The park protects more than 67,000 hectares of the Selva Paranense ecoregion and offers a range of trails and experiences that differ in length and terrain.
The Paseo Inferior is 1,750 meters long and follows walkways with stairs along the waterfalls, where you can experience the cascading water up close. The Paseo Superior is a 1,850-meter, one-way loop along stair-free walkways and is accessible to all visitor groups. A 1,100-meter stair-free walkway across the upper riverbed of the Río Iguazú leads to Garganta del Diablo. The Sendero Macuco is a seven-kilometer round-trip trail where you can watch birds and explore the Selva.
The ways of getting around also differ: the Tren Ecológico de la Selva runs from Estación Central to the Cataratas and Garganta stations. On the Paseo Ecológico, you can explore the islands in the upper Río Iguazú in rowboats departing from the Garganta del Diablo station. So, in addition to the walking circuits, the park offers a rail connection and a boat trip as different ways to get around.
The tariff information dated June 1, 2026, lists the Sendero Verde, the Tren Ecológico, the Circuito Superior, the Circuito Inferior, the Circuito Garganta del Diablo, the Sendero Macuco and the Centro de Visitantes as included in the admission fee. As the areas covered may change, check which services are currently included before your visit.
