Zapala, in Neuquén Province, offers several different starting points for planning a trip: paleontological collections, city history, religious sites, themed routes and a steppe landscape with wetlands and lagoons. When choosing a hotel, it is worth first considering which of these aspects interests you most. Museums, routes and landscapes each give your plans a different focus; they do not need to be treated as one combined itinerary.

Museums and History in Zapala

The Museo Provincial de Ciencias Naturales “Prof. Juan A. Olsacher” has more than 15,000 paleontological specimens. Notable examples include marine reptiles, such as Dakosaurus andiniensis, as well as belemnites. The collection offers a specific focus for anyone interested in paleontology: alongside its size, the named examples are also part of the museum’s holdings.

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Zapala takes a different approach, presenting exhibitions on the city’s history. It also hosts art exhibitions and book presentations. Zapala therefore brings together two distinct cultural themes: paleontological collections at the natural history museum, and exhibitions related to city history, art and literature at the historical museum.

The Cristo Rey Monument stands at the entrance to Zapala. A municipal description from 2020 reported that it attracted hundreds of worshippers and tourists on important dates and religious holidays. This makes it another religious landmark in the city, alongside the museums and their different areas of focus.

Themed Routes and Trip Planning

Zapala is part of the themed Ruta de los Dinosaurios and Ruta de la Fe. The well-known Ruta del Pehuén circular route also begins here. It connects several tourist destinations with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in araucaria forests. For your planning, it is useful to distinguish between them: Zapala is part of the first two themed routes, while the Ruta del Pehuén starts in the city and is described as a circular route. The routes therefore provide different points of interest rather than forming a single tour. You can consider dinosaurs, religious sites or araucaria forests as separate starting points for your plans.

Steppe Landscapes and Outdoor Recreation

Zapala is located in a steppe landscape. Shrubland and steppe areas with wetlands and lagoons provide habitats for black-necked swans, flamingos, ducks and grebes. The landscape and birdlife form a distinct topic alongside the museums and routes, with several different habitats and clearly identified bird species.

The Bosque Comunal on Ruta 13 has a walking trail and areas for beach volleyball, football and field hockey. It also has two swimming pools, planted areas, changing rooms, toilets and palapas. Seasonal opening arrangements may change, so check the current conditions before your visit.

The Los Pinos campground is located in the recreation area around the Bosque Comunal. You can camp there and use the barbecue grills; operating conditions may also vary by season. The facilities differ: the Bosque Comunal focuses on the walking trail, sports areas and other amenities, while Los Pinos offers camping and barbecue grills.
