Junín de los Andes can be explored through a range of themes: the town’s history, archaeological and paleontological collections, a route of stations, and the Río Chimehuín each offer a different perspective. When planning your stay, consider whether museums, Vía Christi, the Paseo Costanera, or an event date should be the focus.

Museums: Town History and a Variety of Collections

In the heart of Junín de los Andes, the Museo Roca Jalil offers insights into local history through objects, stories, and cultural expressions. Its collection includes historical objects, documents, fossils, Mapuche textiles, and items from everyday life. These varied records offer different ways to explore the history and culture of the town.

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal has a distinct focus: its galleries are devoted to archaeology, paleontology, and ethnography. Exhibits include objects related to the culture of Indigenous peoples, as well as marine and dinosaur fossils. Visitors who want to combine cultural topics and fossils in a museum visit will find both represented here.

The Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal preserves, documents, researches, and presents the town’s historical heritage. It offers insights into its identity and cultural heritage. Located in the historic center, it is housed in a building with typical regional architecture; exhibits include photographs, artifacts, documents, and maps. These visual and written materials complement the objects and stories featured in other local collections.

Vía Christi and the Santuario

Vía Christi is a thematic, historical, sculptural, cultural, and religious park dedicated to the unity of cultures. The park features 55 works of art across 23 stations. The signposted walking path from the first to the 23rd station is 1 kilometer long and takes an estimated 1.5 hours. Visitors can also get information about guided tours. The route details provide a concrete basis for planning your time; the duration is an estimate.

The renovated Santuario Nuestra Señora de las Nieves y Beata Laura Vicuña also expresses the unity of the various cultures in Junín de los Andes and throughout Patagonia, and honors Indigenous cultures. Vía Christi and the Santuario both address cultural unity, but in different ways: as a sculpture park with stations and through the message of the sanctuary, respectively.

Along the Río Chimehuín and in Departamento Huiliches

The Paseo Costanera Av. de los Pescadores is 2,000 meters long. It starts at Lamadrid Street and ends at Av. Neuquén. Along the way, you can admire the beauty of the Río Chimehuín; the route can be traveled on foot or by vehicle. By comparison, Vía Christi gives an estimated duration for the route between the first and 23rd stations, while the Paseo’s total length, starting point, and endpoint are specified.

The Área Natural Protegida Boca del Chimehuín is part of the broader destination of Departamento Huiliches. The protected area lies within the municipal boundaries of Junín de los Andes and can be reached via Ruta Provincial 61. It protects a section of the Río Chimehuín, which rises in Lago Huechulafquen, and preserves water quality as well as ecological processes that support a wide variety of species. The area was established to protect species of the Patagonian steppe and the transition zone to the subantarctic forest.

Boca del río Chimehuín is considered a favored fly-fishing area in Departamento Huiliches. All salmonids must be released from December 1 through May 1; check the rules in effect before your trip.

Plan around event dates

Junín de los Andes’s annual events calendar highlights the Fiesta Nacional de la Trucha, which was held again in 2025. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for your chosen travel year separately.
