Paso Hua-hum: Circuit, Forest and Water
Accommodation in Paso Hua-hum
When planning a trip to Paso Hua-hum, you can first decide whether to focus on a road trip, the forest and water landscapes, or the history of the area. Key landmarks include the Hua-Hum circuit, Cascada ChachĂn, the RĂo Hua Hum, and the Van Dorsser Museum.
Road Route and Pass
The Hua-Hum circuit is accessible via provincial road RP 48. From RP 48, an internal road in Parque Nacional LanĂn leads to the access point for Cascada ChachĂn. From Hua Hum, the drive continues for a few kilometers to Cascada ChachĂn. The Hua Hum area also includes the connection to Chile via the international Paso Hua Hum. If you are planning a drive or border crossing, check current road and operating conditions in advance.
Forest and Water
The Hua-Hum route passes through a mixed forest of coihue, raulĂ, and roble pellĂn trees. In the lower-lying areas of Hua Hum, lush Valdivian rainforest extends in from the west. At kilometer 27 of the Hua-Hum circuit, a signed turnoff to the left leads to the beaches of Yuco. At the end of the circuit near Hua Hum, there is a gently sloping beach. At kilometer 48, Lago Nonthue ends and the RĂo Hua Hum begins; its waters flow into Lago Pirihueico in neighboring Chile. The kilometer markers serve different purposes: at kilometer 27, the focus is the turnoff to the beaches; at kilometer 48, it is the transition from lake to river.
Hiking, Activities, and History
The Quila Quina–Hua Hum crossing is part of the southern zone of Parque Nacional LanĂn. This trekking route differs from the access road to Cascada ChachĂn: the focus here is on a crossing, while the road route provides directions to the waterfall access point.
Sport fishing is available in the Hua Hum area, and rafting on the RĂo Hua Hum is another activity. The locations differ: sport fishing is associated with the area, while rafting is specifically associated with the river. Paso Hua Hum is considered an old exchange corridor for Indigenous peoples; later, immigrants of various nationalities settled in the hamlet of Hua Hum.
The Van Dorsser Museum tells the history of the area and also serves as an information center for Parque Nacional LanĂn. If you plan to visit the museum as a stop, check its opening hours before your visit. There is also an inn with a restaurant at the end of the circuit near Hua Hum.
