Discover Viedma on the Río Negro
Accommodation in Viedma
Viedma lies on the south bank of the Río Negro, 30 kilometres from where the river flows into the sea. The city is accessible by air via Aeropuerto Viedma Gobernador Castello; check flight schedules before travelling. Historic sites, museums and the riverside promenade offer different ways to explore the city during your stay.
Historic Squares and Buildings
The Circuito Histórico-Cultural takes visitors to the city’s two most important squares and to notable buildings; the route takes approximately 30 minutes. A distinctive stop is Plaza Alsina, Viedma’s oldest square. It was declared a National Historic Site in November 1986. Puente Ferrocarretero adds a piece of infrastructure history to this historic perspective: it opened on 17 December 1931. Originally, it had a section that could be raised so larger ships could continue upstream to the port of Patagones.
On the Río Negro: Riverside Promenade and Regata
The riverside promenade stretches for more than five kilometres from Puente Ferrocarretero to Puente Basilio Villarino and onward to Costanera Norte. It forms a long stretch along the river, while the bridge also connects with the city’s history. The Regata Internacional del Río Negro finishes at Paseo de los Palistas; it is described as the longest competition of its kind in the world. The Regata and the riverside promenade show two different sides of the river: its importance as the setting for a competition and as a defining feature of the city.
Museums and Their History
The Circuito de Museos connects five museums along a route of about 400 metres between San Martín and Rivadavia streets. They include the Museo Salesiano “Cardenal Cagliero”, the Museo Gardeliano “Lisandro Segovia”, the Museo Tecnológico del Agua y el Suelo “Ingeniero Osvaldo Casamiquela”, the Museo Antropológico “Gobernador Eugenio Tello” and the Asociación “Amigos de lo Nuestro”. The Museo Antropológico and the Asociación are currently closed; take this into account when planning your visit.
The Museo Salesiano “Cardenal Cagliero” is located at Rivadavia 34 and officially opened on 31 January 1980. In the late 19th century, the Apostolic Vicariate of Patagonia, under Bishop Juan Cagliero, operated at this site. The site later became part of Colegio San Francisco de Sales. The museum thus connects the institution’s history with a specific location in the city.
Water Sports, Swimming Areas and Nature
Several water-sports schools and Club Náutico La Ribera make it possible to take part in water sports during most months of the year. As participating facilities and their schedules may change, check the latest information before visiting. Viedma also has two large municipal swimming areas with lifeguard service during the summer. Check the operating dates for this seasonal service before your trip.
Bird enthusiasts will find another connection with nature in the island area of the Río Negro near Viedma. Ducks, black-necked swans, coots and other birds that nest along the banks can be observed there. The island area is close to the city, but is a separate excursion destination outside the immediate city area.
Local Produce and the Surrounding Area
The Circuito de Productores in the IDEVI area near the city centre takes visitors to farms. It showcases the added value of local fruit and offers insight into the traditional skills of rural families. Its first stage connects seven agricultural and educational farms offering guided tours, as well as a rural accommodation complex. Participating farms may change; check the tour options in advance.
In February, the Fiesta Nacional del Río features folk dancing and a wide range of recreational, cultural and sporting activities. Check event dates and the programme before your trip. In the wider travel destination of Departamento Adolfo Alsina, the Camino de la Costa connects Viedma with Puerto San Antonio Este and follows the Atlantic coast through the seaside resorts of El Cóndor, La Lobería, La Ensenada, Bahía Creek and Punta Mejillón. If you plan to take this route, check local road conditions.
