Dina Huapi: Lakeshore, Caves and Local Experiences
Accommodation in Dina Huapi
Dina Huapi combines the lakeside landscape of Lago Nahuel Huapi with river boundaries, the volcanic Parque Cerro Leones and regional visitor attractions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can explore the town through these different themes: time by the water, caves with rock art, local products or cultural heritage.
Lakeshore and River Boundaries
On Lago Nahuel Huapi, Dina Huapi has nearly five kilometers of shoreline with freely accessible, very quiet public beaches. To the north, the Río Limay forms Dina Huapi’s natural boundary; to the south, the Río Ñirihuau does.
A 1.5-kilometer bike path runs along Dina Huapi’s waterfront promenade. This adds a clearly defined route by the water to the beach and lakeshore landscape.
Parque Cerro Leones: Volcanic Remains and Rock Art
Parque Cerro Leones in Dina Huapi consists of the remains of an ancient volcano. The region’s first inhabitants left rock art in its caves more than 8,000 years ago. The park brings together geological and archaeological themes in one place.
The summit excursion in Parque Cerro Leones follows 800 meters of uphill trails, with small bridges and boardwalks leading to the caves. Compared with the bike path along the waterfront promenade, the routes differ in their surroundings and character: here, the lakeshore; there, the climb to the caves.
Regional Products and Cultural Heritage
In Dina Huapi, visitors can learn about the production processes at a whisky distillery, a vermouth bar, breweries, gin makers and artisanal chocolate factories. This means visitors can discover not only the finished products, but also how they are made.
Regional products are sold at Mercado de la Estepa, including textiles made from locally sourced wool, sweets and handicrafts. Unlike the production processes, this is where regional goods are available to buy. The market complements insights into how things are made with a selection of local products.
In Ñirihuau, the old railway station was declared municipal historical, architectural and cultural heritage in March 2012. The caves with their rock art and the station are distinct cultural points of reference: one offers evidence of the region’s first inhabitants, the other represents the municipal heritage of an old railway station.
Regional Orientation
Dina Huapi is a gateway to the Patagonian Steppe via Ruta Nacional 23 and to the Andean zone of Río Negro Province via Ruta Nacional 40. The Río Limay is accessible by vehicle. Trekking in Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi is also associated with Dina Huapi.
