Valle Fértil Department: Landforms, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Valle Fértil Department
In the northeast of San Juan Province, Ischigualasto Provincial Park lies in Valle Fértil and Jáchal Departments. Valle Fértil Department combines striking landforms with hiking destinations, natural areas and places with a history of their own. The Sierras del Valle Fértil form the westernmost foothills of the Sierras Pampeanas system. Valle Fértil itself is an oasis surrounded by sierras, with cardones, jarillas, cacti and algarrobo trees.
Landforms and trails in Ischigualasto
The Circuito Tradicional in Ischigualasto Provincial Park takes about three hours and leads to striking landforms such as El Hongo, El Submarino and Cancha de Bochas. The approximate duration gives you a concrete guide for planning your time. The Caminata al Cerro Morado offers a different perspective: it leads to the summit and provides panoramic views as well as glimpses of the landscape's range of colors. Trekking routes also lead to the Río Salado and Quebrada de la Peña; along the way, erosion by river and wind shapes the landscape. The described routes therefore differ in their focus: landforms on the circuit, summit views at Cerro Morado, and erosion-shaped landscapes on the trekking routes.
Oasis, sierras and birdlife
The natural areas also offer different perspectives. The Reserva de Uso Múltiple Valle Fértil covers 800,000 hectares and is a habitat for numerous bird species. More than 200 bird species live among algarrobo, mistol and quebracho trees in Parque Natural Valle Fértil. The oasis's plant life includes cardones, jarillas, cacti and algarrobo trees; at the same time, the sierras frame Valle Fértil. The vast expanse of the Reserva, the birdlife and the named tree species in Parque Natural are therefore all distinct aspects of the landscape for you to explore.
Water sports and a festival in July
Fishing and water sports are possible at Embalse y Dique San Agustín. This adds a place for waterside activities to the hiking and landscape experiences in Ischigualasto. The Fiesta del Chivo offers a seasonal cultural event: it takes place every year in July in La Majadita, in Valle Fértil. If you want to plan your trip around a recurring date, July is the month specified for the festival.
Rock art and architectural history
The Yacimiento de Ischigualasto comprises several sites featuring Indigenous rock art from pre-Hispanic periods. In San Agustín del Valle Fértil, Iglesia San Agustín y Ntra. Sra. del Rosario is near the main square. It was built over more than fifty years, from 1890 until its inauguration in 1946. In Usno, in Valle Fértil Department, residents built Capilla San Juan Bautista around 1911. Its facade is clad in stone and adorned with a bell gable. The rock art and the two churches illustrate different historical aspects of the department: Indigenous works from pre-Hispanic periods, as well as buildings with documented dates and architectural features.
San Agustín as a base
San Agustín del Valle Fértil is 73 kilometers from Ischigualasto Provincial Park and has accommodations and dining options. If Ischigualasto is a focus of your trip, consider both the distance and the options in town when choosing where to stay. For further planning, you can organize the activities described here by interest: the approximately three-hour circuit and hiking destinations, birdlife and sierras, water sports at Embalse y Dique San Agustín, or the architectural history of San Agustín and Usno.
