Every year on May 3, a celebration is held in honor of Cristo de Renca. A procession with music and dancing winds through the streets, attended by thousands of pilgrims. Before your trip, check the specific festival schedule for your dates. The places and experiences in Chacabuco Department offer other reasons to stay as well—from local handicrafts to waterfalls and hiking trails.
Festivals, Handicrafts and History
In Papagayos, the Festival de la Palmera Caranday brings together gaucho traditions, Creole displays of skill, music and culture. Its 25th edition took place in 2026. Caranday palms also shape the town: several families make hats, dolls and table decorations from palm leaves. The palm groves are among the local attractions, and the handicrafts offer another glimpse into this tradition.
In Villa del Carmen, the Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen is considered the town’s most important historical and cultural heritage site. According to historian Juan W. Gez, Villa del Carmen was founded in 1873 around the former site of the chapel. In Villa Larca, Cueva del Indio is a natural cavity in a large rock. Human remains were found there, believed to belong to a member of an Indigenous community from the Comechingones area.
For practical information in Renca: direct stamping at Casa de los Gobernadores is available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Since opening hours may change, it is best to confirm them before your visit.
Waterfalls and Landscapes
The Quebrada de Villa Elena Nature Reserve is in Cortaderas and follows Arroyo Cortaderas through red granite formations. Its mountain ecosystem offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography and nature tourism. Chorro Grande, also known as Cascada de los CĂłndores, is in the reserve: the waterfall is more than 50 meters high.
The named waterfalls vary considerably in height: Cascada Esmeralda, also known as Chorro Chico, has a drop of approximately nine meters in Cortaderas; Chorro de San Ignacio is 25 meters high and lies between Papagayos and Villa Larca in Chacabuco Department. You can reach Cascada Esmeralda via an approximately 90-minute walk along Arroyo Cortaderas, also known as Villa Elena. The trail is easy to moderate; conditions may vary by season.
Access to Chorro de San Ignacio is via Provincial Route No. 1: from Villa Larca, travel three kilometers south. After the paved road ends, an approximately 500-meter walking trail heads toward the Sierras. Check local conditions before setting out. The tourist complex includes a six-hectare site with campsites, parking, quinchos, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a bathing area in the streambed.
Trails, Viewpoints and Water Activities
Guides and baqueanos lead trekking tours through ravines and to springs in the Comechingones for the ascent to the 1,793-meter summit of Cerro Negro. Confirm local requirements for guided tours in advance. Another point of reference for hikes is the 2.4-kilometer Camino Pintoresco Pedemonte in Villa del Carmen: it leads to the foothills of the Sierra de los Comechingones and offers views of the mountain forest and its abundant birdlife. Trail conditions may vary.
In Villa Larca, Piedra de Luz is a rock formation that appears to balance on the mountainside. A circular route from Establecimiento Piedra de Luz leads to viewpoints overlooking Quebrada del Tala and the broad Valle de Concarán. Dique Piscu Yaco is a reservoir in the Sierra de los Comechingones. Dique Boca del Rio serves tourist purposes and offers opportunities for water sports and walks; its access road is paved, signposted and lit. Since conditions may change, it is worth checking before your visit.
This makes it easy to shape your stay around culture, nature or active outings.
