El Trapiche lies in the hills of the Sierras of San Luis, above a valley crossed by a river. From the city of San Luis, Ruta Provincial 9 leads to the town; Trapiche is about 40 kilometres north of the provincial capital. The road connection and the town’s location in the river valley provide a first point of reference for planning your trip.

Scenery and Places to Visit Around Trapiche

Three kilometres from El Trapiche is the natural site of Siete Cajones. There, the river forms seven deep natural pools surrounded by a mountainous landscape. The Reserva FlorofaunĂstica La Florida is also in the area. A well-signposted circuit of about four kilometres runs through the reserve along a paved, easy-to-drive route. It connects enclosures for axis deer, South American gray foxes, antelopes, iguanas, golden agoutis, maras, partridges and pumas, and passes through espinillo woodlands and the central area.

Ways to actively experience the Sierras around El Trapiche include cycling, hiking, water sports, climbing, sport fishing and horseback riding. Trekking and fishing are also available in El Trapiche. These activities offer different ways to enjoy the area, from exploring the Sierras on foot to spending time on the water.

Every September, El Trapiche celebrates the start of spring and student festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around this period, check the specific event dates in advance.

History and Archaeological Heritage

El Trapiche was founded towards the end of the 18th century. According to local legend, the first mill, a trapiche, was built here to crush gold from the La Carolina mine. This story inspired the town’s name.

Pircas, also known as pilcas, are dry-stone walls built without mortar. They form part of the archaeological and cultural heritage of the Central Sierras of San Luis and can also be found in El Trapiche. Indigenous groups used them centuries ago; this tradition has been passed down locally. Archaeological tourism is also one of the activities available in El Trapiche.

Nearby, the morteros of the RĂo Trapiche are part of the pre-Columbian archaeological heritage. They bear witness to the presence of Indigenous peoples in the region. Together with the pircas, they provide a tangible link between the cultural heritage and the history of the Sierras.
