Discover Las Colonias Department
Accommodation in Las Colonias Department
At Las Higueritas, nature and learning come together in a hands-on offering for children: in technology and biology workshops, they explore nature and experience it up close. This gives Las Colonias Department a nature-focused dimension that sets it apart from its historic sites and the outdoor activities in Esperanza.
Las Higueritas is in Las Colonias Department. A route description dated October 25, 2024, takes visitors from Ruta 6 along a westbound turnoff near San Carlos Sud, then about five kilometers along a gravel road to Las Higueritas. The outdoor grounds described that same day include a large grove of trees, a soccer field, a children’s play area, a playground, outdoor restrooms, and a small barbecue area.
Another nature destination is the Reserva Universitaria de la Escuela Granja de Esperanza. It is in Las Colonias Department, five kilometers from Esperanza, and was established as a 33-hectare reserve. In the municipality of Esperanza, the JardĂn Botánico Municipal presented a collection of around 600 different plant species as part of an educational offering on botanical systematics.
Seven kilometers north of Esperanza, the Camping Municipal Intendente Bertero is located on the RĂo Salado. Anglers have access to the river there. This site offers a different connection with nature than the reserve and botanical collection: here, access to the river for fishing is the main attraction.
History, Culture, and Leisure
Esperanza offers visitors a variety of things to discover. Both the BasĂlica de la Natividad de la SantĂsima Virgen and the Iglesia EvangĂ©lica del RĂo de la Plata have been recognized as national historic heritage sites. The Museo de la ColonizaciĂłn is one of the places where Esperanza’s history is documented.
At Parque de la Agricultura, attractions include Ciudad de los Niños and Museo de la Máquina AgrĂcola. The park also has a velodrome homologated by the Union Cycliste Internationale, which hosted the Cruz del Sur Pan American Games.
Outdoor activities in Esperanza include camping, sport climbing, rappelling, zip-lining, hiking, birdwatching, archery, and orienteering. X-RAZE AVENTURA adds multi-adventure courses led by instructors and available at different difficulty levels. They are open to participants from preschool age through adulthood.
Events also offer insight into regional traditions and interests. The Fiesta del Moncholo in Esperanza was recognized as an event of provincial significance by a 2019 provincial decree. The decree states that the festival had been held every September without interruption since 1988. The 2026 edition of the “1ª Vuelta departamento Las Colonias” will travel through villages, squares, and streets over three days, bringing together stories, engines, and historic automobiles.
Historic Traces and Local Specialties
In San Carlos Centro, the Templo San Carlos Borromeo was blessed on May 13, 1862. Its great age gives it significant historic value, and it is religiously connected to the origins of the community of San Carlos Centro. The Museo HistĂłrico de la Colonia San Carlos opened on September 24, 1978.
The history of glass cutting includes a workshop founded by Jorge and Roberto Peralta in 1976, after they went independent from CristalerĂa San Carlos. Using simple tools, they created different patterns on pieces of glass. Torta Alemana, meanwhile, is a typical recipe from Esperanza. You can try it at local bars, restaurants, and bakeries; offerings at individual establishments may change.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Las Colonias Department, first decide what you’d like to focus on: Esperanza combines historic attractions, outdoor activities, and Torta Alemana; Las Higueritas is known for children’s workshops and close contact with nature, while San Carlos Centro offers a history of its temple and glass cutting.
