If you’re looking for a hotel in Tolhuin, specific differences between the trails and destinations can help you plan: there’s a self-guided trail in the town center, a lakeside path to a waterfall at Lago Khami, and other natural attractions in the surrounding area. Birdwatching, cycling and cultural offerings are also among the activities you can use to tailor your stay to your interests.

Trails and Nature Experiences in Tolhuin

The Paseo del Ecotono runs through the town center of Tolhuin. This self-guided trail is 800 meters long and has an easy difficulty level. On the southern shore of Lago Khami, also known as Lago Fagnano, a lakeside path no longer than 800 meters leads to Cascada la Porfiada. The two trails offer different destinations: one is a short walk in the town center, while the other follows the lakeshore to a waterfall.

The Haiken chache interpretive trail is intended for birdwatching. Migratory and native birds can be observed there, and September through March is recommended as a suitable time to visit. Another nature trail, Paisaje en Movimiento, is located in the Laguna Negra Provincial Reserve. This easy trail is suitable for family hikes, birdwatching, cycling and sport fishing.

Paisaje en Movimiento passes through Andean-Patagonian forest and peat bogs. Information panels share knowledge about the species found there and their geological origins. The trail thus combines exercise with a look at habitats and how they developed.

Access Points and Destinations Nearby

Two access points are described for the Laguna Negra Provincial Reserve: in the south, there is an entrance exclusively for pedestrians from the parking area at Lago Khami. The northern entrance is for vehicles and can be reached via Avenida de los Ñires and local roads. Check the local route before your visit.

Near Tolhuin, the RĂo Valdez Provincial Reserve protects areas of forest, peat bogs and a small portion of the Ecotone. Cerro Jeujepen is also nearby. Its moderately difficult ascent trail leads to the summit; the round trip is listed as taking approximately three hours. The Cerro Jeujepen viewpoint offers 360-degree panoramic views from an elevation of about 300 meters.

Other activities are the focus at Laguna del Indio: trekking, canoeing, sport fishing and camping are offered there, and there is also a suitable cycling route. The destinations therefore vary both by activity and by time required, with an approximate duration given for the ascent of Cerro Jeujepen.

Culture, Food and Getting There

Tolhuin’s event history also adds to its nature-focused offerings. In 2022, the Escultura en Hielo festival had already been held in Tolhuin for more than a decade in a row. The Casa de la Cultura Municipal is one of the facilities overseen by the municipality’s culture and education department. The department’s public cultural spaces are dedicated to preserving, sharing and promoting exhibitions, as well as educational and artistic events.

In the town center, the traditional bakery La UniĂłn invites visitors to sample sweet treats. Tolhuin can be reached from Ushuaia via Ruta Nacional 3. When planning, you can distinguish between trails in the town center, nature activities in Tolhuin and destinations in the surrounding area, and tailor your stay to the things that interest you most.
