Choosing where to stay in Oranjestad

When looking for a hotel in Oranjestad, you can start by considering whether you want to explore the downtown area primarily for its history and culture, or include routes between the harbor, center and coast in your plans. Oranjestad combines old and new elements to create a distinctive cityscape. A scenic linear park runs along the coast from Oranjestad to the airport. Its coastal setting offers a different focus from the downtown cultural sites.

Fort, tower and museums

Fort Zoutman was built to protect the city from pirates. It dates back to 1798 and is Aruba’s oldest building. The Willem III Tower was built in 1868 and formerly served as a lighthouse and public clock. At the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum, you can see a historical collection of documents and events from the past.

The Historical Museum is located between Fort Zoutman and the Willem III Tower. It features a permanent exhibition on important events in Aruba’s history as well as changing themed exhibitions. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance which topics are currently on display. This helps you keep the permanent exhibition and changing program in view as distinct aspects.

The historic Ecury family home in downtown houses the Archaeological Museum. It displays artifacts from the pre-ceramic period, dated to around 2500 BC. Cas di Cultura is Aruba’s national theater. Together with the museums, the theater offers another perspective on the island’s cultural life, without requiring you to focus on any one area of the city’s history.

Culture in the cityscape

The Bon Bini Festival is a weekly folkloric music and dance festival in the courtyard of Fort Zoutman in downtown. Check the latest dates before your trip. Another cultural project is Paardenbaai Aruba: it was unveiled in Oranjestad in 2015 and features eight blue horses in the downtown area.

The harbor and routes through downtown

The cruise port is on the north side of downtown Oranjestad. The central bus station is located downtown, right next to the cruise terminal and Royal Plaza. These location references help you distinguish between the three landmarks. For specific bus connections, it is worth checking the current schedule, as routes and times may change.

You can explore downtown on foot or by streetcar. The Downtown Trolley connects the cruise terminal with the city center and runs along Main Street, which is a pedestrian zone. It stops at six stations near monuments, museums and major shopping areas. This makes it easy to connect the route’s features with different interests: Main Street provides a way through the pedestrian zone, while the stops near cultural and shopping areas offer additional landmarks to help you find your way.

The Aruba Aloe Vera Factory and Museum is located at 115 Pitastraat in Oranjestad. Confirm the address before you travel if you want to include this location in your plans.

Aruba in a wider context

Oranjestad is part of the wider destination of Aruba. The small island lies in the southern Caribbean, about 15 miles north of Venezuela. Aruba also offers varied landscapes beyond the cityscape: over thousands of years, waves and strong winds have carved several natural bridges into the limestone cliffs on the north coast. These coastal formations are part of the island as a whole and are distinct from Oranjestad’s cultural sites.

The old stone California Lighthouse stands in Hudishibana near Aruba’s northwestern tip. It offers views of the west coast, with its beaches and coral shores. The lighthouse and natural bridges add to your understanding of Aruba; the fort, museums and routes through downtown, by contrast, describe Oranjestad’s urban focus.
