Antioquia between the Western Andes, parks and festivals

Antioquia is part of Colombia’s Western Andes. Two specific perspectives shape this local overview: the geographic profiles of two national parks and four named festivals. The protected areas can be described in terms of elevation, location and size, while the festivals are associated with Sabaneta, Medellín, Sonsón and Sopetrán. This combination gives you an initial sense of the region’s landscape geography and locally rooted culture. The specific purpose of your trip is a useful starting point when planning a hotel stay.

Two national parks with different elevation profiles

The Parque Nacional Natural Paramillo also extends into Antioquia. Its elevation ranges from 125 meters above sea level in the north to 3,960 meters in the south. That is a difference of 3,835 meters. The north-to-south figures illustrate the park’s considerable range and provide a concrete measure for understanding its geography.

The Parque Nacional Natural Las OrquĂdeas is located in Antioquia between the municipalities of Frontino, Urrao and AbriaquĂ. The protected area covers 28,794 hectares and lies on the western slope of the Western Cordillera, within the biogeographic ChocĂł complex. Its elevation ranges from 300 to 3,400 meters above sea level, a difference of 3,100 meters. The western slope identifies its position on the western side of the cordillera; together with the ChocĂł complex, this provides a specific geographic description of the protected area.

In a direct numerical comparison, Paramillo’s elevation range of 3,835 meters is greater than Las Orquídeas’ range of 3,100 meters; Paramillo’s lower endpoint is also lower, and its upper endpoint higher. Both parks are closed. If you are considering a visit, check access in advance and take the closures into account when planning.

Four named festivals

Four of Antioquia’s important festivals are the Fiestas del Plátano in Sabaneta, the Feria de las Flores in Medellín, the Fiestas del Maíz in Sonsón and the Fiestas de las Frutas in Sopetrán. The place names anchor each festival to a specific destination. Their titles also highlight different themes: Plátano (plantain), Flores (flowers), Maíz (corn) and Frutas (fruits). The festivals can therefore be distinguished both by location and by the themes in their names. Alongside the protected areas’ geographic context, they offer a cultural way to discover Antioquia.

When choosing where to stay, it is worth first deciding on the focus of your trip. A festival-focused visit centers on Sabaneta, Medellín, Sonsón or Sopetrán and the relevant event date; a nature-focused itinerary can take the elevation profiles into account, but must also consider that both parks are closed. Check the event date before planning your trip around it, and confirm access before planning a visit to a park. This way, you can choose accommodation based on specific destinations without conflating different reasons for travel.
