Uribia: Nature and Culture in La Guajira
Accommodation in Uribia
When planning a trip to Uribia, it is worth distinguishing destinations by their geographic scope. The Parque Nacional Natural Macuira, the Parque Nacional Natural Bahía Portete Kaurrele, and the Festival de la Cultura Wayúu relate to the municipality; the Pilón de Azúcar near Cabo de la Vela is in the wider surrounding area. This distinction helps separate the municipality’s nature and culture themes from a destination in the surrounding region. So if you are looking for a hotel in Uribia, the first important question is which of these themes will shape your trip.
Landscapes in the Municipality
The Parque Nacional Natural Macuira extends over approximately 25,000 hectares in the municipality of Uribia and fully overlaps with the Resguardo Wayuu de la Alta y Media Guajira. The hectare figure describes the park’s approximate area, while the overlap describes its spatial relationship with the Resguardo. Macuira thus represents a large protected area and a clearly defined land area within the municipality.
In the municipality, the Parque Nacional Natural Bahía Portete Kaurrele protects a broad range of coastal ecosystems and landforms: mangroves, seagrass meadows, coral formations, beaches, shallow soft-bottom areas, coastal marshes, salt flats, and rocky coastal stretches. Compared with Macuira, whose scale and overlap with a Resguardo define its character, the focus here is on the diversity of the coastal landscape. The two protected areas therefore offer different nature themes for trip planning: Macuira’s large-scale setting and the varied coastal environments of Bahía Portete.
Travel to Parque Nacional Natural Macuira
From Riohacha, the drive to the municipality of Uribia takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. From there, another vehicle takes you to Parque Nacional Natural Macuira; this second leg takes about 8 to 9 hours. These are two separate legs, not one continuous drive to the park. For your planning, it is important to account for the longer onward journey after arriving in the municipality: the journey to Uribia alone does not cover the entire trip to Macuira.
Culture and Pilón de Azúcar
The Festival de la Cultura Wayúu takes place annually on a weekend in May in the municipality of Uribia. It is considered the most important cultural event in the Department of La Guajira. The May timing provides a reference point for trip planning. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for your chosen year before setting your travel dates.
Near Cabo de la Vela, in the wider surrounding area of Uribia, the hill known as Pilón de Azúcar can be climbed on foot in no more than 15 minutes. The time refers to the ascent. Indigenous people call the white rock in the sea at Pilón “Kamaici”; the name means “Lord of the Things of the Sea,” and the rock has mythological significance. At Pilón, a short climb and a culturally significant landscape feature come together. In terms of time, this walk is clearly different from the several-hour onward journey to Macuira; however, the figures refer to different destinations and types of travel.
