Magdalena: Nature, Wildlife and Culture
Accommodation in Magdalena
Magdalena offers different ways to experience nature and culture. The ecosystems of Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca, the wildlife of Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the cultural history of Aracataca each have their own focus. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to prioritize nature observation and trails, species conservation or cultural topics.
Ecosystems and Wildlife
Some of the key ecosystems of Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca include coastal marine areas, mangrove forests, bodies of water, sedimentary soils, and semi-arid and subxerophytic forests. This description therefore encompasses aquatic and mangrove areas as well as different types of forest and soil. For nature enthusiasts, this offers several ways to explore the ecosystems of this protected area, rather than focusing on just one landscape.
Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta also encompasses territory in Magdalena. The park protects 49 threatened species among the 3,057 recorded species. Its endemic species include 19 amphibian, 13 reptile, 5 mammal and 22 bird species. These figures answer different questions: the first compares the number of threatened species with the total number of recorded species; the second shows how the figures for endemic species are distributed across animal groups. In this way, species conservation and the breakdown by animal group offer two complementary perspectives.
Trails and Nature Observation
Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca has three land trails: El Cangrejo, Olivos y Clemones and El Cocodrilo. While hiking these trails, visitors can observe birds, animals and plants, as well as take part in environmental interpretation. These activities combine movement with an appreciation of the natural surroundings, with nature observation forming part of the trail experience.
The El Manglar trail in Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca is a raised platform over Caño Clarín Viejo. This specific trail structure differs from the three land trails and gives you an additional point of reference when exploring the park’s trails. Water trails are another category: La Cuna del Caimán and Ciénaga de Marchena are listed as currently active water trails and are operated by staff. Confirm their current operating status with the park before your trip.
Land trails and water trails are therefore two different ways to explore the offerings of Vía Parque.
Cultural History in Magdalena
The stilt settlements of Bocas de Aracataca, also known as Trojas de Cataca, Buenavista and Nueva Venecia, also known as El Morro, have stood since the mid-19th century in the Ciénaga de Pajaral marshland and on Ciénaga Grande. Their names and traditional names tie the history of these settlements to the region’s waterscapes.
In Aracataca, Casa del Telegrafista is a white house with red doors and is considered part of Colombia’s historical and cultural heritage. Eligio García, the father of writer Gabriel García Márquez, worked there. The connection to the writer comes from his father’s work at this location.
Also in Aracataca, a mural stands beside the old irrigation canal next to Parque Lineal Macondo. It comprises almost thirty paintings depicting parts of Gabriel García Márquez’s novels. More than fourteen artists from Aracataca and neighboring communities contributed to it. Thus, alongside Casa’s biographical connection, there is a community-created interpretation of parts of the novels. These two subjects lend different emphases to Aracataca’s cultural history: the work history of Eligio García on the one hand, and the visual interpretation of literary works on the other.
For your trip planning, these themes are clearly distinct: ecosystems and trails at Vía Parque Isla de Salamanca, threatened and endemic species at Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and settlement and literary history in Magdalena. Choose your focus based on which of these perspectives interests you most.
