Discover Meta: Caño Cristales, hiking trails and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Meta
Caño Cristales displays shades of green, yellow, pink and red, depending on the natural rain cycle. These colors are associated with Macarenia (Rhyncholacis clavigera), an endemic aquatic plant. The phenomenon changes seasonally, making the relationship between plant life and the rain cycle a defining natural feature of Meta. So if you are planning your trip around particular landscape experiences, you should also take the season and the latest visitor information into account.
Caño Cristales: Colors and Hiking Trails
Along the hiking trails at Caño Cristales are waterfalls, natural pools, ancient rock formations and distinctive carpets of colorful plants. Visitor highlights include Piscina del Turista, Carol Cristal, Manto de la Virgen, Piedra Negra, Las Águilas, La Escalera and Los Cuarzos. The names refer to different stops in a landscape whose colors vary with the season.
For the 2026 tourism season, visitors could hike six trails from May 29 through December: Salto del Águila, Los Pianos, Intermedio, Caño Escondido, Caño Cajuche and Los Pailones. The trails are 5 to 10 kilometers long and take around 5 to 7 hours to walk; their difficulty ranges from moderate to high. This information helps with planning your time and shows that hiking is a major focus of a visit. Routes and conditions may change seasonally. Check the current park rules and visitor authorization before your visit.
Laguna del Silencio and Scenic Views
The nine hiking trails at Laguna del Silencio pass through savannas, gallery forests and floodplains. Seasonal visitor activities include hikes with environmental interpretation, birdwatching and wellness experiences; the area is managed by the community. This area offers a different focus from the colorful waterways of Caño Cristales: here, several ecosystems and a variety of activities take center stage. Check current access and available activities before your visit.
From the Mirador–Cristalitos trail, you can see the Serranía de La Macarena and the Río Guayabero. An official notice from December 2025 named Caño Cristales, El Mirador–Cristalitos and El Raudal Angosturas I as destinations for regulated ecotourism activities in the municipality of La Macarena. Check the latest park information and visitor authorization before your trip.
Raudal de Angosturas: Nature and Cultural Heritage
The Cajón del Raudal on the Río Guayabero is navigable during the summer season. If you are planning this boat trip, check current conditions locally. At Raudal de Angosturas 1, the hiking trails include Ciudad de Piedra, Miradores–Petroglifos and Aguas Claras.
