Los Santos: Trails, Views and Culture
Accommodation in Los Santos
The municipality of Los Santos brings together several travel interests: La Mojarra is close to the town center, the Camino Real leads from Los Santos to the municipal seat of Jordán, and the Mesa de los Santos has viewpoints and the Mercado Campesino. To start planning, you can decide whether trails, climbing, panoramic views, or cultural history will shape your stay.
The Camino Real and Canyon Views
The Camino Real Los Santos–Jordán is a winding, 5.5-kilometer trail connecting the municipality of Los Santos with the municipal seat of Jordán. Along the route, there are six kiosks where you can take a break and enjoy views of the Chicamocha Canyon and the Chicamocha River. The trail thus combines a clearly defined route with places to rest along the way.
The Teleférico del Parque Nacional del Chicamocha offers another way to cross the canyon: its cable car route is 6.3 kilometers long and provides panoramic views. The municipal tourism website describes the cable car as unique in the world. The station is named “Estación Teleférico Mesa de Los Santos.” The distances refer to different types of routes: a winding trail for the Camino Real, and a canyon crossing for the cable car. If you plan to take the cable car, check its current operating status beforehand.
Climbing and Views on the Mesa
La Mojarra is a climbing area near the town center of the municipality of Los Santos. Parque de Escalada La Mojarra has more than 70 designated climbing routes. On the Mesa de los Santos plateau, you’ll also find numerous viewpoints with panoramic views of some of the country’s most spectacular mountains. This gives you the choice of making climbing routes or expansive landscape views the focus of your trip.
Guane Culture, Handicrafts, and August 5
Numerous remains of the Guane culture have been found in the municipality of Los Santos. These include tools, pottery, bowls, vessels with composite silhouettes, containers, and rock paintings. The artifacts and depictions give the municipality’s cultural heritage a tangible breadth, distinct from its outdoor activities.
The Mercado Campesino is located in the rural Mesa de los Santos area. It offers a wide selection of handicrafts from Los Santos and the entire Chicamocha Canyon region. The market is also a place to discover works from the municipality and the wider canyon region.
August 5 is an annual civic holiday in the municipality of Los Santos. Several activities are led by the parish priest of the consecrated church. If your trip falls around this date, check which activities are planned for that year.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
The municipality of Los Santos is accessible by private vehicle, taxi, or the Flota Cáchira and La Culona intercity bus lines. If traveling by bus, check the current schedule directly with the operator beforehand.
When looking for a hotel for a trip to Los Santos, your planned activities can help guide your choice: consider whether the Camino Real, climbing routes, viewpoints, or the market will shape your stay.
