Playa Girón
Accommodation in Playa Girón
Playa Girón is located in south-central Cuba. The beach of the same name lies on the eastern edge of the Bahía de los Cochinos and within the Ciénaga de Zapata. There are opportunities for fishing in Playa Girón. The destination’s appeal also includes a historic place name, the Museo Girón, and natural attractions in the surrounding area.
Place Name and History
The place name Playa Girón recalls Gilbert Girón, a French-born pirate who sought refuge in the area in the 17th century. The Museo Girón in Playa Girón is small and modest. It commemorates Cuba’s victory in April 1961 over an invasion force trained by the CIA and organized by the United States. These two references represent different periods: the name’s history reaches back to the 17th century, while the museum commemorates 1961.
Nature and Geology in the Surrounding Area
The Caleta Buena diving area is nearby. Visitors can experience clear water and a wide variety of tropical fish there. Cenote El Brinco is a karst lagoon in the Sistema Espeleolacustre de Zapata that has not yet been fully developed. It is 3–4 meters wide and about 12–15 meters long. A roof covers most of it; the water pool lies several meters below the entrance, and there are flooded galleries. Caleta Buena is characterized primarily by its aquatic environment and fish, while El Brinco stands out for its dimensions, roof, lower-lying pool, and flooded galleries. Its width and length convey the karst lagoon’s horizontal extent, while the roof and lower-lying pool add its vertical structure.
Cienaga De Zapata as the Regional Setting
The wider destination of Cienaga De Zapata provides the broader regional setting. The Ciénaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve covers 628,171 hectares. Its habitats include grasslands, mangrove forests, and swamp forest, as well as semi-evergreen and evergreen coastal and near-coastal forests. Coastal and near-coastal scrub vegetation, coral reefs, and coastal lagoons are also part of it.
Laguna del Tesoro is a natural lake with an area of 9.0 km² and an average depth of 4 m. It is surrounded by pristine vegetation, and the lake contains numerous trout. The Ciénaga de Zapata is also considered a refuge for the Cuban crocodile.
Next to the tourist center of Guamá on Laguna del Tesoro is a replica of a Taíno village, featuring numerous life-size sculptures by Rita Longa. They depict Indigenous people engaged in everyday activities. The Museo Girón commemorates Cuba’s victory over the invasion force in April 1961; the sculptures at Guamá depict Indigenous people in everyday activities and thus represent a different cultural theme.
