Fernando De La Mora offers several distinct ways to shape your stay: the cultural heritage of Kamba Kuá, historic sites, religious traditions, performing arts and nature-based recreation. If you are looking for a hotel in the city, these themes can help you tailor your trip to your interests. The options range from recurring feast days to a theater that serves as a year-round venue and a park that gives families opportunities to spend time in nature.

Kamba Kuá: Cultural Heritage and Feast Day

The Kamba Kuá community in Fernando De La Mora has preserved one of Paraguay’s most distinctive cultural expressions for more than two centuries. Paraguay’s National Secretariat of Culture declared the cultural expressions, artistic and performance forms, customs, rituals and festivities of the Afro-descendant group to be intangible cultural heritage. The recognition is recorded in Resolution SNC N°743/2015. It therefore encompasses a broad cultural field, from artistic expressions to customs and rituals.

One concrete expression of this tradition is Kamba Kuá’s annual celebration in honor of San Baltasar on January 6, which coincides with the Feast of the Epiphany. It brings together Catholic religious elements and African traditions passed down through generations. The celebration includes processions, novenas and ritual dances, as well as a traditional arts festival. At the traditional arts festival, children, young people and adults perform choreographies to Tamboril and Candombe rhythms. The celebration thus brings together religious elements, inherited practices and performing arts in a recurring event.

Historic Sites and Religious Traditions

The Museo Histórico Municipal is housed in one of the city’s oldest buildings. Loma Campamento is a historic site associated with the old Afro-Paraguayan community known as Kamba Kuá. The museum’s historic building provides a connection to the past, while Loma Campamento offers a connection to a community and its cultural heritage.

The Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa is also venerated in Fernando De La Mora, and her patronal feast is celebrated each year on November 27. The Parroquia Medalla Milagrosa was founded in 1942. November 27 is a recurring annual date distinct from January 6, when Kamba Kuá celebrates San Baltasar. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these celebrations, check current event information in advance.

Arts and Nature-Based Recreation

The Teatro Municipal is a distinct focal point for the performing arts. It serves as a venue for numerous artistic events throughout the year and promotes national talent. Unlike celebrations with set annual dates, it has a year-round role as an events venue.

The Parque Ecológico de Fernando de la Mora offers families a place to connect with nature, relax, play or get active. This focus differs from the city’s historic and religious themes: here, it is about spending time outdoors and being active, while those other themes center on cultural expressions, places and feast days. This distinction can help when deciding between cultural activities and nature-based recreation.
