Concepción combines the Cerrado landscape with a rich cultural and historical offering. In the department, protected natural areas and a safari through the Cerrado ecosystem meet museums, a historic center, and places along the Río Ypané. When planning your hotel stay, it may help to decide on your focus first: the Cerrado and natural areas, cultural stops in Concepción, or an occasion such as the patron saint festival in Yby Yaú.

Cerrado and Natural Areas

Parque Nacional Paso Bravo is located in the Departamento de Concepción, in the Aquidabán region. Another natural area is Reserva Natural Estrella Saité: this privately owned protected wilderness area was established by Executive Decree No. 2,602/24 and covers 25,209.05 hectares. It extends across parts of the district of San Lázaro and the municipality of San Carlos del Apa; the Cerrado ecosystem is its primary focus of protection. The department’s natural context also includes the Ecorregión del Aquidabán, the Ecorregión del Amambay, and Selva Central.

The Safari del Cerrado de Concepción offers a tour through the remarkable biodiversity of the Cerrado ecosystem in the department. These nature experiences differ in scale: Paso Bravo is situated in the Aquidabán region, Estrella Saité is defined by its area and conservation focus, while the safari highlights the Cerrado’s biodiversity. This allows you to weigh up a named natural area, a large protected area, and a tour with an ecological focus when planning your trip.

Cultural Sites and Architecture

The Municipalidad de Concepción promotes the Siete Tesoros de Concepción tourist route. It consists exclusively of seven selected sites and monuments in the city, described as particularly emblematic; their selection is connected to a plan for Concepción’s designation as a cultural capital in 2023. The historic center offers a different perspective on Concepción: it covers about 25 city blocks and preserves colonial houses and European-style villas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While the route brings together seven selected stops, the historic center encompasses a larger architectural area.

The Museo del Cuartel de la Villa Real, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Museo al Aire Libre, and Casa de la Cultura offer insights into local art, history, and cultural expression. There is also an image of the Virgen María Auxiliadora, more than 20 meters tall, on Avenida Pinedo. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest visitor information in advance.

Places, River, and Traditions in the Department

The white-sand beaches along the Río Ypané near Belén are suitable for relaxing, sport fishing, and canoeing. Also in Belén are the Ruinas de Purutue Ka'í, the remains of a historic complex from the 19th century. Belén therefore offers both riverside activities and a historical landmark; each may appeal to different interests when planning your trip.

Yby Yaú celebrates its patron saint festival in honor of San Francisco de Asís every year on October 4. If this event affects your travel dates, check the details for the relevant year in advance. This lets you consider the festival date as a distinct reason for your trip, while the department’s natural and cultural offerings provide other points of focus regardless.
