San Bernardino: Waterfront, History and Culture
Accommodation in San Bernardino
San Bernardino was founded in 1881 as a summer resort. Its attractions offer different perspectives: the Costanera brings Lago Ypacaraí into view, while memorial sites, historical collections and works of art show the city from other angles. To plan your trip, you can first consider whether you are more interested in the lakeshore, the city’s history or cultural experiences.
Costanera on Lago Ypacaraí
The Costanera de San Bernardino, also known as “SanBer,” is 850 meters long and lies on the shore of Lago Ypacaraí. It has places to rest and spend time, including benches and viewpoints. The Costanera offers panoramic views of the lake. If you would like to focus your trip on the waterfront and scenery, this is a specific place to start.
The Costanera is described as a route for cycling. It is also mentioned as a place to take photographs, especially at sunset. The waterfront promenade thus caters to a range of interests: views of the lake, a route described as suitable for cycling, and photography at a particular time of day.
City history and settlement heritage
Paseo de los Ilustres is an open-air area dedicated to commemorating important figures from the city. Casa Hassler, by contrast, focuses on historical everyday objects: its exhibits include items, antique furniture, photographs and household objects used by the first European settlers of the summer resort, most of whom were German. The tour of Casa Hassler is described as free and open to the public; check current visiting options before your visit.
Another perspective can be found at the Centro de Experiencias Turísticas de San Bernardino in Casona Büttner. The Casona is considered a symbol of the heritage and influence of German settlers in the region. The historical sites thus differ in focus: Paseo de los Ilustres commemorates figures from the city, Casa Hassler displays objects from the settlers’ lives, and the Casona represents the region’s settlement heritage.
Views, art and music
A staircase leads up to Mirador Bella Vista, one of the highest points in the city. Escalinata y Mirador Bella Vista also includes an approximately four-meter-high representation of Virgen de la Aparecida. The viewpoint and religious representation are thus part of a named site.
Fuente de la Inspiración is located at Paseo Demetrio Ortiz: it consists of two eye-shaped sculptures facing one another and blinking. Paseo del Recuerdo focuses on sound and movement. Visitors can move levers on tubes there to produce notes that together form the chords of “Recuerdos de Ypacaraí.” The paseo runs along the city’s cycling path.
La Morena at the beach roundabout offers an outdoor karaoke experience where visitors can sing Guaranias. The examples also differ in how visitors take part: Fuente de la Inspiración is a visual work of art, sounds are created through movement at Paseo del Recuerdo, and at La Morena visitors can sing themselves.
Anfiteatro José Asunción Flores is designed as a cultural and artistic venue in San Bernardino for outdoor music events, performances, festivals and community activities. San Bernardino therefore offers both individual art installations and interactive experiences, as well as a venue designed for a range of cultural events.
