Flores: Geopark, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Flores
Flores offers many reasons to explore its landscapes, wildlife and history. The UNESCO Global Geopark Grutas del Palacio is located in the Department of Flores, in southern central Uruguay. It features natural landscapes as well as geological, paleontological, archaeological, historical and cultural attractions. This gives you a range of topics to explore during your stay, rather than reducing Flores to a single kind of travel experience.
Geopark and Landscapes
Grutas del Palacio is the Geopark’s most emblematic site and gives it its name. In Uruguay, the caves were formed by water erosion. A roof around 70 centimetres thick is supported by reddish, hardened sandstone columns averaging two metres in height. The cave’s formation makes geological processes a tangible part of the nature experience. The site has scientific, educational and tourism value.
The Chamangá Rock Art Site protected area offers a different perspective on the landscape. It covers more than 12,000 hectares east of Trinidad and lies within the RĂo Negro basin and the Chamangá stream sub-basin. The stream’s sources are located in the Cuchilla Grande Inferior. The area’s size and the description of its watershed give you two different points of reference for understanding the protected area: its extent and its location within a larger river system.
Nature and Activities
The Dr. Rodolfo Talice Flora and Fauna Reserve grew out of the “Flores por la vida” project and was inaugurated on July 30, 1991. At Ecoparque Tálice, experiences centred on wildlife and the park grounds take centre stage. Visitors can ride on the lake in white swan-shaped boats or explore the park by electric bus and observe animals in their natural habitat. The park offers visitors of all ages an educational and entertaining nature experience.
Ecoparque also includes an area of more than 40 hectares for visitors to explore, where large herds of deer and peccaries live. The park’s protected area is home to 1,500 animals from 120 species; these figures may change. The lake, wildlife viewing and expansive grounds offer different aspects of the nature experience without needing to be combined into a single itinerary.
Nautical activities, sport fishing, geotourism and nature tourism are also part of what is on offer in the Lagos de Andresito area of the Department of Flores. Another boating option takes visitors to the shores of Arenales de Paso del Palmar, which tourists can reach by boat on the “Andresito.” Check current availability of this trip before making plans.
Archaeology, Museum and Art
In Trinidad, the Museo Histórico Departamental de Flores Dr. Fernando Gutiérrez is housed in a former railway station built in 1916. The museum displays fossilised dinosaur remains and archaeological material related to the rock paintings in the Chamangá protected area. The site thus combines a historic railway station building with exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the department.
Projectile points, bolas, cores and numerous flakes have been found at Arenales de Paso del Palmar. The objects are associated with people who lived there thousands of years ago; this period may date back more than 10,000 years. The archaeological interpretation therefore remains open, while the different types of finds give a tangible impression of the traces of human life being studied there.
Another cultural highlight is MartĂn Arregui’s artwork ZooilĂłgico del Futuro. It consists of 13 cut-out iron sculptures set at equal intervals along National Route 3. The figures depict cosmic motifs and native animals, with a tool beneath each sculpture. The recurring motif and even spacing give the work a distinctive form, different from Flores’ historical and archaeological themes.
Plan Your Stay
For your trip, it is useful to consider each focus separately: the Geopark is known for its geological formations and diverse attractions, Chamangá for its large protected area and waterways, and Tálice for wildlife viewing and activities in the park. Trinidad adds a museum and railway station architecture to the mix, while the finds at Arenales de Paso del Palmar offer an archaeological perspective. If you are looking for a hotel in Flores, you can first decide which of these themes you would like to shape your stay, then compare the location of your accommodation with your personal travel plans.
