Marino between beach, lagoon and culture
Accommodation in Marino
Marino offers several ways to experience your stay: Playa La Caracola is a place for beach activities, while the Laguna de El Morro, home to flamingos and other birds, lies alongside it. Porlamar complements these natural attractions with art, architectural history and celebrations in honor of its patron saint; the Faro de La Puntilla and Paseo Guaraguao add their own architectural touches. The Mercado Regional del Mar in the Punta sector is another local landmark.
Beach and birdwatching
Playa La Caracola is approximately four kilometers long. Especially in the morning or afternoon, you can walk, run, skate, cycle or walk your pets there when vehicle traffic on the adjacent road is restricted. These restrictions may change, so check when they apply before making plans.
Next to Playa La Caracola is the Laguna de El Morro, also known as Laguna Blanca. Flamingos and other birds can be observed there. The beach and lagoon offer two different nature experiences: at Playa La Caracola, the activities mentioned above take center stage, while at the lagoon, the focus is on birdwatching. When planning your trip, you can choose between them based on whether you would rather set aside time for activities or wildlife observation.
Art and architectural history in Porlamar
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Francisco Narváez in Porlamar has a permanent exhibition of works by sculptor Francisco Narváez and other Venezuelan artists. The exhibition thus connects the work of a sculptor named Francisco Narváez with works by other artists from Venezuela. For art enthusiasts, it offers a cultural focus distinct from the beach and nature attractions.
The Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari in Porlamar offers a different historical perspective. Built in 1853 in the Neo-Gothic style, it took several decades to complete. The date and the long construction period offer different points of reference: the church’s history encompasses both its architectural style and the building process, which lasted several decades.
The Faro de La Puntilla was declared a Monumento Histórico Municipal on August 15, 1998, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of European seafarers on Isla de Margarita. The Faro includes a fountain, an amphitheater and a promenade, where trees and palms provide shade. Its historical significance comes from the date and occasion of the designation, while the fountain, amphitheater and promenade describe the site’s architectural features.
At Paseo Guaraguao, notable features include a broad paved area and a bust of Venezuelan writer and politician Rómulo Gallegos. It stands on a rectangular pedestal. The combination of a named work of art and a specifically described area gives this place a character different from the museum’s art collection or the church’s architectural history.
Every year on December 6, Porlamar celebrates a festival in honor of its patron saint, San Nicolás de Bari. It includes the ringing of bells, a solemn Mass and a procession bearing the image of the saint. Unlike a permanent exhibition or historic building, this tradition takes place on a fixed date and may be worth considering when planning the timing of your trip.
Market and regional context
A state government report dated March 14, 2026, describes the Mercado Regional del Mar in the Punta sector after its renovation, with fish and vegetable stalls, food kiosks, a parking lot and public lighting.
The wider destination of Nueva Esparta comprises the islands of Margarita, Coche and Cubagua. At this regional level, Parque Nacional Laguna de la Restinga is considered suitable for birdwatching and observing seahorses. This extends the nature attractions beyond the birds at Laguna de El Morro without confusing the two lagoons.
Nueva Esparta also offers a regional cultural connection: in 2026, six cultural practitioners from the destination received the award “Patrimonio Cultural Viviente del Estado Bolivariano de Nueva Esparta.” This recognition of living cultural heritage at the regional level complements Porlamar’s specific buildings and religious tradition.
