Alhaurín de la Torre lies between the Málaga metropolitan area and the Valle del Guadalhorce region on the Costa del Sol. Its landscapes, hiking trails and historical traces give the town a variety of facets. On Jabalcuza, you’ll encounter a striking mountain landscape; across the municipality, buildings and archaeological finds tell of different periods of settlement. When planning your stay, you can decide which of these aspects you’d like to focus on.

Landscapes and Hiking Routes

The municipality lies in the Sierra de Mijas, which belongs to the Cordillera Penibética, and is watered by the Guadalhorce River. Jabalcuza towers over the urban area and features cliffs and terraced plateaus. At 679 metres above sea level, the mountain has a natural viewpoint. This elevation and the described terrain give a specific impression of the landscape, but do not in themselves indicate how difficult a hike is or how long it takes.

A route between Arroyo Zambrana and Jabalcuza was the municipality’s first officially certified hiking trail. It is just over three kilometres long and forms part of the GR 249, the Gran Senda de Málaga. Another distance given for the Gran Senda is 28.8 kilometres: this variant passes through the Sierra de Mijas and connects Jarapalos with Puerto de los Pescadores. The distances differ considerably and help you gauge the planned route; on their own, they do not tell you how long it will take. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Traces from Different Eras

Among the earliest signs of settlement in the area are permanent settlements dating from 1000 to 700 BC. The first Iberian inhabitants traded with the Phoenicians. Several Roman villas have been discovered, associated with agricultural production and metal extraction. During the Islamic period, the population was concentrated in alquerías, or hamlets. This sequence shows different forms of settlement and economic activity, but the finds alone do not guarantee that individual archaeological sites are accessible to visitors today.

A notable structure is the Acueducto de la Fuente del Rey: this unfinished engineering work dates from the 18th century and is of historical and technical significance. The Arcos de Zapata form its most monumental section; some arches are obscured by residential buildings. The Nasrid Tower of Torrealquería is also notable for its dimensions. It retains two levels, reaches up to seven metres in height and has load-bearing exterior walls up to 2.50 metres thick.

Culture and Activities

The 2025 municipal cultural report records 122 visits by schools and secondary education institutions to the Museo Andaluz de la Educación, with a total of 6,300 students. There were also 17 scientific workshops for a total of 600 people, five holiday camps with 120 participants, and 13 talks or conferences with 1,560 participants in total. The programme may change from year to year; check the current offerings when planning a specific visit.

A zip line reaches speeds of more than 100 km/h and is located at an elevation of 190 metres; it is described as the longest zip line in Southern Europe and the longest dual zip line in Spain.

Sunview Park is located on C. Comedias in Alhaurín de la Torre and has on-site parking. If you’re travelling by bus from Málaga, the park offers a free pickup from the stop in the Barriada Torrealquería. Finca El Portón is a venue for culture and outdoor activities.
