Atajate: Wine Traditions, Architectural History and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Atajate
Atajate lies in the SerranĂa de Ronda. When planning your trip, you can choose from different focuses: buildings and archaeological traces, local wine traditions, and hiking trails through the mountain landscapes around the Valle del Genal. The town’s history can be traced through individual buildings; the Must Festival and via ferrata offer other points of interest. This lets you decide whether culture, wine or outdoor activities will be the deciding factor in choosing your destination.
Architectural History and Historical Traces in Atajate
The Iglesia de San José, also known as Iglesia de San Roque, is a Baroque church dating from the 18th century that was remodeled in the 19th century. Another old landmark in the town is the Cruz de Piedra, one of Atajate’s oldest buildings. The Lavadero Público de Atajate adds an example of vernacular architecture to these buildings: the public washhouse was built in 1932. Together, the three sites illustrate different aspects of architectural history—from the church and its later alterations to a 20th-century washhouse.
The Torre de Santa Cruz and the hill known as “El Castillo” also point to different historical contexts. An Arab fortress stood on the hill beside the old road from Ronda to Algeciras, La LĂnea and Gibraltar. The Torre de Santa Cruz controlled the route from Ubrique to Atajate, as well as the nearby irrigated fields. Its grounds contain numerous archaeological remains from prehistoric, Roman and Arab times. The Torre is reached on foot along a path.
Wine and the Fiesta del Mosto
The Museo Abierto al Vino is dedicated to wine, which is important to Atajate. Texts, illustrations and tools show the production process. The museum therefore offers a different perspective from the buildings: rather than focusing on the history of a particular building, it explores the production of wine, which is important to the town.
The Fiesta del Mosto is celebrated every year on the last Saturday in November. If you plan to travel for the occasion, check that year’s program in advance. At the 2025 edition, must from different grape varieties was distributed free of charge to residents and visitors; the tasting arrangements may vary from year to year. Queso de almendra is also among the culinary specialties associated with Atajate. The festival, the wine at the museum and this specialty each offer a distinct experience; they do not describe the same thing.
Hiking Trails and Via Ferrata
For those interested in trails through mountain scenery, Atajate offers another reason to visit. Hiking trails run through the mountain landscapes around the Valle del Genal. The PR-A 229 between Alpandeire and Atajate is also part of the hiking network in the Ronda region. These routes therefore have different contexts: the network connects two towns via the PR-A 229, while the other hiking trails are described as options in the area around the Valle del Genal.
The VĂa Ferrata Atajate is different, with its specific climbing sections. At the beginning, there is a short overhanging section and a lateral traverse, followed by the first monkey bridge. A long Tibetan bridge is the standout feature. Conditions and equipment requirements may change, so check them before making plans. Guided via ferrata tours are offered in Atajate, among other places; check in advance whether a suitable option is currently available.
Atajate thus combines historic buildings and traces from different periods with wine-related attractions and trails in the mountains. For trip planning, you can consider these separately: the Iglesia de San José and the Cruz de Piedra represent architectural history; the museum and festival focus on wine; and the hiking trails and via ferrata offer outdoor activities.
