Casabermeja brings together protected buildings, handcrafted ceramics, distinctive landscape sites and hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel destination where culture and outdoor activities are two separate priorities for planning, Casabermeja offers plenty to explore: historical building phases, a ceramics museum, named routes and viewpoints. Regional goat products and a festival are also among the topics you can take into account when planning your trip.

Buildings, Ceramics and Visits

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is considered Casabermeja’s most important urban landmark. It was built in the first half of the 16th century and expanded in the 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and a transept vaulted by a dome. The church’s construction and later expansion give it a clear historical sequence.

The Cementerio de San Sebastián is also part of the town’s historic character. It was built in the 18th century, designated a Monumento Nacional in 1980, and granted Bien de Interés Cultural status in 2006. This allows the site’s construction date to be distinguished from its later protection designations.

The craft of ceramics is still practiced in Casabermeja. The Museo Taller de Cerámica was established in 2007 and features a permanent exhibition as well as several temporary exhibitions. The program of temporary exhibitions may change. Ceramics thus stands alongside the town’s older architectural heritage as a cultural highlight in its own right.

The Enclave Arqueológico de Peñas de Cabrera includes prehistoric rock paintings in numerous rock shelters on Cerro de Cabrera. It lies in an exceptionally well-preserved landscape, whose flora and fauna are predominantly native. Visits to Peñas de Cabrera are arranged for groups of 10 to 50 people by prior agreement. Request your preferred date at least one week in advance and reconfirm the arrangement before your trip.

Landscape, Views and Hiking Trails

The Olivo Milenario is a monumental olive tree, recognized as such by the University of Córdoba on April 5, 2013. It is over 1,000 years old; this was confirmed in a dissertation by Concepción Muñoz at the University of Córdoba. The tree grows from three trunks, each with a circumference of more than seven meters. Its age, recognition and the remarkable size of its trunks give this landscape feature several distinct qualities.

Torre Zambra is a Muslim watchtower on top of a strategically situated hill. In clear weather, panoramic views of Málaga, the Montes de Málaga, parts of Granada, the Torcal and North Africa are possible from there. The visibility condition is important for planning: the panorama depends on whether visibility is clear on the day of your visit.

The six named hiking routes include Ruta de las Fuentes, Ruta de los Tajos, Ruta Campo de Cámara, Ruta Las Peñas de Cabrera, Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén and Ruta Torre Zambra. Ruta de las Fuentes leads to the Las Parras Nuevas spring; the Roman waterworks known as Castelum Aquae and the Cementerio de San Sebastián are also located there. In addition to the El Calvario chapel, Ruta de los Tajos includes an architecturally distinguished viewpoint with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains.

Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén reaches Cerro Mallén, which, at 915 meters above sea level, is the highest point in the municipality of Casabermeja. The route offers 360-degree views across much of Casabermeja and the province of Málaga. It also passes through Bocanegra, a wooded area with native Mediterranean forest species. Check the conditions of the relevant route before setting out.

Regional Products and Festival Culture
