Fuengirola can be explored through a range of interests. When looking for a hotel, it can help to decide in advance which themes you want to shape your stay: an Arab fortress with several functions today, archaeological remains, changing exhibitions or the beach. The following places give you concrete points of reference for considering these options and planning your trip.

Fortress, history and animal habitats

Castillo Sohail combines a historical function with a present-day use: the Arab fortress was converted into a concert hall and a multipurpose venue. It stands at the mouth of the Fuengirola River on an isolated hill that rises 38 metres above sea level; panoramic views can be enjoyed from there. If you are interested in local history, this structure offers both a fortress and a place now used for a different purpose. The slopes were continuously inhabited by Punic and Roman communities in antiquity.

The Roman Baths of Torreblanca are also part of the Roman heritage. The ancient bathing complex is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural, has been restored and preserved, and forms part of Fuengirola’s archaeological heritage. The focus at the slopes of Castillo Sohail is on ancient settlement, while at the baths it is on their use as a bathing complex. These different emphases offer two concrete ways to explore the city’s history.

BIOPARC Fuengirola offers a different perspective: there you can see more than 200 animal species from the tropical rainforest. The habitats are from Africa, Asia, Madagascar and the islands of the Indo-Pacific. The focus is therefore on rainforest species and the different geographical habitats represented in this diversity.

At Parque del Yacimiento on Finca del Secretario, visitors can see Roman archaeological remains. Explanatory panels illustrate life in this era. They add to the picture of the Roman past with a place where the remains and their interpretation are both in focus.

Exhibitions, traditions and squares

Museo de la Ciudad is a cultural institution with changing exhibitions. If you are interested in culture, it offers a different way to explore the area than the historic buildings and archaeological sites: the exhibition theme changes, while its character as a cultural institution remains the same.

A recurring event in the annual calendar is the Feria del Rosario, held every year from 6 to 12 October. The programme includes a procession of the patron saint, dancing, and a parade with horses and carriages. The Feria thus combines religious tradition with dancing and a festive parade. If you are planning a trip during this period, check the event dates for your visit.

A centuries-old ficus tree stands in Plaza de la Constitución, where it is known locally as “Arbol de las Pelotillas.” The tree stands opposite Iglesia del Rosario. This gives the square a clearly defined point of reference: the ficus is identifiable not only by its age and local name, but also by its location opposite the church.

Beach and arrival information

Playa Castillo is 800 metres long and has fine, dark sand and calm bathing waters. Its length, the nature of the sand and the bathing conditions are concrete points to consider if you want to include time at the beach in your travel plans. Alongside the historical and cultural themes, it offers another focus to consider when choosing your destination.

There is also a specific travel-time estimate to help you plan your arrival: walking from Fuengirola railway station to the marina takes about 20 minutes. This estimate is for the route on foot and can help you plan the time needed for this leg of your journey.
