San Pedro de Alcántara: Hotels for Culture and Coast
Accommodation in San Pedro de Alcántara
San Pedro de Alcántara offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: early Christian archaeology, industrial history, green spaces and a promenade on the Mediterranean. Consider which themes you want to shape your stay. This will help you assess the locations and their different visiting arrangements.
Sugar Cane, Industry and Local History
The sugar factory at Trapiche de Guadaiza, built by Juan Bautista Lesseps in 1827, is considered the first industrial facility in San Pedro Alcántara. On the ruins of the Trapiche, Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha built the Granja-Modelo in 1861, also known as the Escuela de Capataces, as part of the Colonia Agrícola de San Pedro Alcántara. The traditional architecture of the buildings was preserved during the restoration.
The Ingenio Azucarero was established in 1871 to complete the agricultural and industrial cycle of sugar cane cultivation. Its complex also included wine cellars and the La Alcoholera distillery. La Alcoholera (El Ingenio) is a performing arts centre. Another historic landmark is the Villa de San Luis: built in 1874 as the residence of the Cuadra family, it is now the seat of the Tenencia de Alcaldía.
Early Christian and Roman Architecture
The Basílica Paleocristiana de Vega del Mar is located on Calle Eucaliptos, Urb. Linda Vista Playa, in San Pedro Alcántara, Marbella, Málaga. The early Christian basilica has two apses and is considered archaeological evidence of early Christian faith. The site includes a necropolis where around 200 burials have been excavated. Guided tours of the basilica are listed from 11:15 to 14:00. As visiting arrangements may change, check the times before your visit.
The Termas Romanas de las Bóvedas are Roman baths dating from the 2nd century AD. Their layout is octagonal, with an open core in the centre, complemented by several niche-like recesses. Group visits are listed on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 11:00. Check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
The Torre de las Bóvedas was built between 1571 and 1575 as part of the coastal watchtower network. Its entrance is 6.75 metres above ground. This unusual height offers a specific architectural point of comparison with the layouts and building structures of the archaeological sites.
Promenade, Parks and Special Dates
The Paseo Marítimo de San Pedro Alcántara stretches for several kilometres along the Mediterranean and features extensive landscaped areas. It is also suitable for photography. When it opened in 2015, a public cycle path between Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara was mentioned. If you are planning a bike ride, check its current condition and access beforehand.
The Parque de los Tres Jardines covers 95,200 square metres and has more than 10,000 plants. It is divided into an Arab, a Mediterranean and a Subtropical Garden. The Boulevard San Pedro Alcántara is a 54,000-square-metre urban park and is considered a meeting place for locals and visitors. The green spaces therefore differ both in size and design: the Parque features three types of gardens, while the boulevard is characterised as an urban park.
The Feria y Fiestas San Pedro Alcántara takes place on 19 October in honour of the patron saint. During the day, there is a fair in the centre and on the Boulevard de San Pedro Alcántara; at night, it is held at the fairground. The annual programme may change; check the dates and details for your travel period. This means the timing differs from that of the visits: the patron saint’s festival is tied to 19 October, while you should confirm the listed visiting hours for the basilica and baths in advance.
At Playa de La Salida, supervised sea bathing with amphibious chairs is available; advance booking is required. As operational details may change, check the service and booking arrangements before your visit.
