Adeje: Nature and Cultural Heritage for Your Trip
Accommodation in Adeje
Different interests may influence your choice of a hotel location in Adeje: protected landscapes and sweeping views, architectural history or recurring celebrations. The municipality brings together themes that are easy to plan for separately. Choosing a focus first can help you shape your trip around whether nature, historic sites or a particular event date should take centre stage.
Landscapes and views
The Reserva Natural Especial del Barranco del Infierno covers 1,843.1 hectares within the municipality of Adeje. Roque del Conde is also located in this protected area: a volcanic rock formation at about 1,000 metres above sea level. Its approximate elevation and location within the protected area give this distinctive rock formation a clear connection to the landscape.
The summit plateau of Roque del Conde offers panoramic views of the coasts of Adeje, Arona, San Miguel and Granadilla de Abona, as well as parts of Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide. This viewpoint differs from the historic architecture in the town centre: here, the focus is on the landscape and views across several stretches of coastline. If this is your main interest, you can factor it into your decision to visit Adeje alongside its historic sights.
Architectural history and cultural heritage
Casa Fuerte was built in 1556 and served for three centuries as the political, economic and social centre of the jurisdiction of Adeje. It was associated with a sugar factory, construction of which began in 1554 under Pedro de Ponte. The two dates refer to different construction projects and point to the early history of this historic centre.
Iglesia de Santa Úrsula also brings together several phases of construction. It traces its origins to a chapel dedicated to Saint Ursula from the first half of the 16th century and was one of the first religious buildings in southern Tenerife. The present-day church consists of two naves built in different periods. Its architectural details include an interior roof structure in the Mudéjar style, sgraffito on parts of the exterior walls and a bell gable. In its centre is a small pedestal bearing the head of an idol.
The Franciscan monastery of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y San Pablo was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category in 1986. After restoration in 1991, it opened to the public in May 1995 as the Museo de Arte Sacro. These dates describe its historic use; if you are planning a visit, check current access separately.
Public buildings include the Fuente de los Tres Chorros on Calle de Los Molinos, built in 1890. The name “Ruta del Agua” also reflects the history of water in Adeje: it refers to the historic route from Barranco del Infierno, via the fountains and canals in the town centre, to the sea. This connection explains the project’s name and adds the theme of water to the area’s architectural history.
Celebrations and excursions at sea
Semana Santa de Adeje takes place every year and showcases religious, artistic and cultural heritage. Romería de Adeje is celebrated every October, when music, colour and Canarian traditions shape the municipality’s historic centre. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these celebrations, check the exact dates for your travel year before booking.
Responsible whale- and dolphin-watching excursions depart from Puerto Colón in the municipality of Adeje. The programme includes an introduction to the marine environment and refreshments. A swimming stop is planned if conditions allow. As availability and conditions can change, check the latest excursion details in advance.
Planning your trip around your interests
Whale and dolphin watching is another distinct focus, with a swimming stop subject to conditions. This lets you choose your destination based on what matters to you during your stay, and check event dates or excursion details before booking.
