Arafo can be explored for your trip planning across different timeframes and themes: a roughly 1.5-hour walk through the historic center, natural areas with native flora, and hikes lasting several hours. This lets you plan local history and longer walks as separate highlights. The walk can begin at Señor del Pino and continue to the Juan Carlos I Auditorium and the town hall.

Volcanic Landscape and Natural Areas

In 1705, the historic eruption of the Las Arenas volcano occurred in Arafo, on the southern flank of the Caldera de Pedro Gil, at an altitude of about 1,525 meters. The Las Siete Lomas Protected Landscape also lies partly within Arafo. This protected agricultural landscape was shaped by more recent lava flows from the Arafo volcano. Rocky areas and ravines provide habitats for threatened species, including the Vicácara.

The Barranco de Añavingo natural area covers 35 hectares of designated natural interest. Its native flora includes Vicácara, wild thyme and Canary Island pine. A trail along the ravine leads to historic mills, aqueducts and water galleries; the usual access point is Plaza de San Juan Degollado. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

The Chimague Viewpoint lies on the edge of the Corona Forestal Natural Park and is part of the island's network of viewpoints. On clear days, the panoramic view extends as far as Anaga Rural Park and the island of Gran Canaria. Weather matters for this view: distant visibility is only possible in clear conditions.

Walking Tour, Hiking Trails and Getting There

The Ruta de Los Peregrinos is described as a moderately difficult hiking trail. It starts at La Crucita and leads past the Las Arenas volcano and the Caldera de Pedro Gil to Arafo. Two options are listed for the route: about 14.5 kilometers, taking around six hours, and about 12.5 kilometers, taking around three hours. Both end in Arafo. You can take the distance and stated time into account when planning your day; check current trail conditions before setting out.

To get to Arafo, take the TF-1, exit toward the Valle de Güímar, then follow the signposted local roads. Several TITSA bus routes connect the town with other municipalities in the valley and with Santa Cruz. Check current routes and timetables before traveling. The main access to the Las Siete Lomas protected area is the TF-523 road. It connects Arafo with the C-824 and crosses the eastern part of the protected area over about seven kilometers; check road conditions before traveling.

Historic Buildings and Water Use

The Iglesia de San Juan Degollado developed from a chapel built after 1676. Several later extensions shaped the church as it stands today. Inside are four altarpieces dedicated to Purgatory, Saint Joseph, Our Lady of Sorrows and the Immaculate Conception. There are also paintings and religious sculptures from the 18th century. Access to the church interior may depend on service times.

The Casona de la Esquina de los Carros is an example of rural Canarian architecture and was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Historic Site category in 2006. The two-story house has a hipped roof on all four sides, covered with Arabic tiles, a balcony and an exterior staircase providing direct access to the upper floor. Secundino Delgado lived in the Casona.

The Ruinas de Lo De Ramos offer a different historical perspective. They lie in the mid-altitude areas of Arafo, at 650 meters. Designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2008, the site bears witness to a former agricultural and religious Augustinian settlement dating back to the first years after the conquest of Tenerife. The Old Mill and Public Washhouse complex is also protected: it was designated an ethnological site in 2006 and is notable for its sophisticated water-use system. Check local access conditions before visiting these sites.

Music, Festival Traditions and Local Insights

Arafo maintains an ongoing musical tradition that has been established since the 19th century. A regular date in the annual calendar is the Romería de San Agustín, held on the Saturday before the last Sunday in August. Parrandas and rondallas, along with ox-drawn carts, travel along the town's main streets. Check the program for the relevant year before your trip.

The Mercado del Agricultor de Arafo is located at Plaza de la Iglesia de San Juan Degollado. Check whether the market is currently open before visiting. For regional context, viticulture in the municipalities of Arafo, Candelaria and Güímar covers around 700 hectares of agricultural land. In Arafo, guided tours of wineries are offered as part of landscape and cultural routes. Contact the local tourism services for current availability.
