Fasnia
Accommodation in Fasnia
Fasnia is best explored via its hiking trails, rural cultural landscapes and volcanic formations. The routes offer different highlights: one links several hamlets and historic water sources, while others pass old paths, volcanoes or distinctive habitats. If you’re looking for hotels in Fasnia, these themes can help you structure your trip planning and choose the focus of your stay.
Hiking trails between hamlets and cultural landscapes
The Ruta Circular de La Zarza begins in the district of La Zarza and links the hamlets of La Zarza, La Sombrera and Sabina Alta. Stops along the route include historic water-supply sites and springs. One of these is the Naciente de La Zarza, which once supplied local residents with water. The route description thus links a specific sequence of places with the history of local water use.
Traditional rural buildings and agricultural terraces also lie along the route. They were built using volcanic materials such as Tosca and Jable. The combination of settlements, agriculture and the materials used makes rural architecture a distinctive aspect of this trail.
The SL-TF 263 Fasnia–El Escobonal linear hiking trail can be walked in either direction: because it is linear, the start and end points are interchangeable. You can start at the ruins of the 17th-century Ermita de San Joaquín or at a point beyond the Iglesia de San Joaquín in the centre of Fasnia. The Plaza de la Iglesia in El Escobonal is the other endpoint. The trail partly follows the old Camino Real; in some places, its original paving has been preserved.
The landscape along the SL-TF 263 is shaped by agriculture. The trail crosses mid-altitude areas with cultivated land and small settlements; its surfaces include paved sections and dirt tracks. This route therefore highlights both the historic path and the present-day cultural landscape.
Volcanoes and protected nature
Specific trail details are available for the Volcán de Fasnia route: it is a moderate, non-certified linear trail covering 7.2 kilometres. It takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes; the recorded elevation gain and loss are both 247 metres. The duration is an estimate. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The route passes old volcanic cones and circles the black cones of the eruption known as Volcán de Fasnia, which took place in January 1705. It runs through Teide National Park. The trail profile and volcanic formations thus describe different aspects of the same hike: the physical demands indicated by distance, duration and elevation, and the landscape along the way.
Acantilado de La Hondura is designated an area of scientific interest. The rock formation consists of lava flows and pyroclasts, is 30 metres high and 2,500 metres long, and features small coves and ravines. You can reach the area via the exit for Las Eras. Several hiking trails lead into the protected area from the road connecting Las Eras with the TF-1, which forms its boundary. Check trail conditions locally before setting off.
The Barranco de Fasnia y Güímar offers a different natural setting, with pine forests, tabaibal scrub and rocky vegetation. The plants mentioned there include the endemic, threatened Cerrajón (Sonchus gummifer). From the centre of Fasnia, take the TF-28 towards Güímar to reach the starting point: the road crosses the ravine about one kilometre from the town centre. As road conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current situation before driving.
Local history, crafts and coastal walks
Museo Vieja Escuela La Zarza dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and preserves furnishings representative of that period. A look at its exhibits adds a facet of local history to the landscape routes.
Traditional bobbin lace, or calado lacework, is also part of the local cultural heritage: in some households in Fasnia, mothers continue to pass it on to their daughters. The tradition is thus described as being passed down within families.
For coastal walks, there is a small promenade near Playa de Las Eras; the beach also has a large car park. As infrastructure information may change, it is a good idea to check the latest details before visiting.
