La Esperanza offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: Bosque del Adelantado just behind Plaza del Adelantado, the GR 131 Anaga–Chasna long-distance hiking trail, which begins in La Esperanza, and the neocolonial Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de La Esperanza. Nature, hiking and religious art are therefore clearly distinct themes to explore.

In Bosque del Adelantado: Trails and Plants

Bosque del Adelantado lies immediately behind Plaza del Adelantado and covers 25,397 square metres. Footpaths, small trails, steps and bridges cross the small ravine. If you make nature the focus of your trip, the woodland offers both specific trail features and botanical interest. As trail conditions can change, check the current situation before your visit.

Bosque is home to vegetation typical of the Canary Islands’ laurel forest. This includes laurel (Laurus azorica), tree heath (Erica arborea) and Viñátigo (Persea indica), as well as the climbing plant Bicacarera (Canarina canariensis) and the shrub Pata de gallo (Geranium canariense). These characteristic plants also help define the woodland’s natural character.

Hiking: Woodland and Long-Distance Trail

The GR 131 Anaga–Chasna runs from La Esperanza in El Rosario to Arona. Its route passes through Parque Natural de La Corona Forestal and Parque Nacional del Teide. The first stage runs from La Esperanza to La Caldera. This gives you both the long-distance trail’s overall route and a specific first section. If you are planning around a stage, the section from La Esperanza to La Caldera is the relevant information; for an overview of the entire trail, the route extends to Arona. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The difference between Bosque del Adelantado and the GR 131 is one of scale: the former is a woodland with footpaths and small trails, while the latter is a long-distance hiking trail with an overall route and stage information.

Church and Religious Art

Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de La Esperanza is a neocolonial church. It was built on a site where a hermitage once stood. The architectural style and the site’s history are two distinct aspects: neocolonial describes the church, while the former hermitage marks the site’s religious use in an earlier period.

Inside are a Baroque depiction of Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores and a San Juan dating from the 17th century. The church has also been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. This building therefore brings together a history of the site, a named architectural style and specific examples of religious art.

Festive Culture in La Esperanza

The municipal programme for 2026 announced that La Esperanza’s Romería would feature folk groups, floats and livestock, as well as thousands of Romeros dressed in traditional clothing. The Romería was also due to celebrate its 50th anniversary. These details refer to the announcement and plans for 2026. Traditional cuisine played a prominent role at an evening of the Baile de Magos “La manta esperancera.” Alongside church art and history, La Esperanza’s cultural offerings thus also include festive traditions and the culinary significance of this evening.
