La Matanza De Acentejo
Accommodation in La Matanza De Acentejo
La Matanza De Acentejo offers a range of ways to explore nature, culture and local food. Los Nateros is known for its agricultural terraces, vineyards, chestnut trees and pine trees; numerous trails run through lush sections of the Barranco de Acentejo. Historic sites and local produce add to these attractions. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which focus you would like to shape your trip.
Landscape and Nature
Los Nateros is a cultural landscape where agricultural terraces and vineyards are as much a part of the scenery as chestnut trees and pine trees. The protected landscape area of Las Lagunetas also includes parts of La Matanza De Acentejo. El Montillo is home to a nature and landscape reserve covering around 60,000 m², with a fayal-brezal forest. The protected beetle subspecies Pimelia radula radula has one of its last habitats there. El Montillo is therefore notable both for its forest landscape and for its specific species conservation efforts.
Trails and Outdoor Recreation
Numerous trails run along the Barranco de Acentejo, where you can walk through lush vegetation on some sections. The ravine was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in 2007. Nature and cultural heritage meet here in the same place, while the trails offer their own opportunities to discover the landscape on foot. Los Nateros also has two circular routes with soft surfaces, suitable for walking or outdoor exercise.
The trail at Montaña La Bandera in Los Nateros has been restored. The SL-TF 26 (Los Nateros–La Vica–Los Nateros) is also officially approved within the municipality; its approval was published in 2023. Check current trail conditions before setting out. For mountain biking, the BC-1 Ruta Norte is another option: connecting turnoffs link it to the rural settlement of Los Nateros. The 22-kilometre Las Calderetas–Lagunetas–Gaitero circular route passes through La Vica.
The Paseo Peatonal along the TF-5 service road is also part of the visitor infrastructure; it has coastal viewpoints. The various details about trails and routes cover different formats, from the two circular routes in Los Nateros to a mountain bike route and a 22-kilometre circular route.
Hermitage and Local History
The Ermita de San Antonio Abad is considered one of Tenerife’s oldest hermitages. It houses an image of Saint Anthony. According to tradition, it was the first image of the saint to arrive on the island after the conquest. One of the island’s most traditional pilgrimages is dedicated to San Antonio Abad and begins at the old hermitage.
The Parroquia de El Salvador also has a turbulent construction history. It was built in the 20th century on the site of an older church, which was burned down by a group of anarchists in July 1936. La Matanza De Acentejo is therefore home to religious buildings with different historical backgrounds: an old hermitage with a traditional account of how its image arrived, and a parish church whose predecessor was destroyed.
Local Products and Recreation
The Mercadillo del Agricultor sells produce from La Matanza and the Comarca de Acentejo, including fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine, handicrafts and baked goods. Its offerings combine agricultural produce with handcrafted items, adding a culinary dimension to the cultural landscape.
The La Vica recreation area is a good choice for a picnic or an outing. In addition to its trails, El Montillo has areas for play, leisure and outdoor recreation. The two places offer different ways to take a break outdoors: La Vica is suitable for picnics and outings, while El Montillo combines trails and recreational spaces.
