San Juan del Reparo: Church, Tradition and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in San Juan del Reparo
San Juan del Reparo combines ecclesiastical heritage and religious tradition with a variety of hiking routes. The Iglesia de San Juan del Reparo dates back to the 16th century. The hiking trail to Garachico also begins here; route PR-TF 43 runs from Garachico through San Juan del Reparo and continues towards Montaña Chinyero. Both cultural themes and trails with different destinations are therefore part of the character of the town.
Church and Religious Tradition
The Iglesia de San Juan del Reparo has a MudĂ©jar-style ceiling. The artesonado ceiling in the main chapel features intricate lacerĂa decoration. MudĂ©jar refers to the architectural style, while lacerĂa refers to the ornamental design on the ceiling. The church also contains a painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The church’s architecture and the named painting thus provide distinct cultural accents.
For Corpus Christi, the neighborhood decorates the streets with carpets made from flowers and other plant materials. Vertical religious panels are also created from these materials. The decorations combine floral carpets with upright motifs and shape the streetscape during the celebration. Unlike the main chapel’s ceiling, they are not a permanent architectural feature, but part of the religious tradition and the neighborhood’s collective work.
Views of the Town and Harbor
The Mirador de Garachico is about 460 meters above sea level and offers a broad panorama of the town. The hiking trail to Garachico offers a different perspective: from its cobbled switchback section, there are views of Garachico and its harbor. The viewpoints therefore differ in a specific way: the mirador offers a panorama of the town, while the views along the trail look out over the town and harbor.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
The hiking trail from San Juan del Reparo to Garachico starts in San Juan del Reparo and runs along Calle El Monte. Its route includes a cobbled switchback section that was once an old bridle path. From there, there are views of Garachico and the harbor. The trail is rated easy. Its destination, historic path and views give this hike a different character from the volcanic sections of PR-TF 43.
PR-TF 43 runs from Garachico along the Camino de El Lance through volcanic lava flows to San Juan del Reparo and continues towards Montaña Chinyero. The route also includes a circular trail around the Chinyero volcano through volcanic cinder fields. On clear days, it offers panoramic views of El Teide and Pico Viejo. The routes described therefore differ both in their course and in the landscapes mentioned: the trail to Garachico offers views of the harbor and town, while PR-TF 43 takes in volcanic formations and, on clear days, the two peaks.
