Discover Casavells: Heritage and Routes
Accommodation in Casavells
Casavells brings together architecture and traces of history with routes and events. For your trip planning, you can consider these topics separately: Sant Genís and the fortification wall offer a cultural and historical perspective; landscape routes and events have different points of focus. This lets you plan your hotel stay around what brings you to Casavells.
Romanesque church and traces of history
Sant Genís de Casavells is listed as a cultural asset by the Ministry of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The church has a single nave, is Romanesque, and has a semicircular apse; it dates to the 12th or 13th century. “Single nave” describes the layout of the church interior; the apse is a semicircular part of the church building. Its design and period therefore provide two concrete points of reference for understanding Sant Genís architecturally.
The fortification wall of Casavells is classified as a medieval BCIN. Together with Sant Genís, it provides another cultural and historical reference point, but with a different focus: the church is notable for its Romanesque design and dating, while the wall is notable for its medieval classification as a fortification. Those interested in historic buildings can thus distinguish between religious architecture and fortifications.
The archaeological history of the area also has concrete points of reference. In November 2023 and November 2024, archaeological work enabled the documentation of five historic cemeteries in Casavells. Forty-four graves were identified in the necropolis. A late medieval double grave in the necropolis is attributed to the “Lovers of Casavells.” Alongside the buildings, archaeological work and a specific historical attribution therefore provide additional topics in their own right.
Routes and landscape
Routes from Casavells follow rivers, cross the volcanic Puig Rodó, and pass through orchards and fields. The landscapes range from river courses and Puig Rodó to agricultural land. When planning an outing, you can consider these different landscape features as well as the route length.
A 72 km cycling route runs from Casavells via Santa Pellaia, Sant Andreu de Salou, and els Àngels, before returning to Casavells; it has an elevation gain of 1,050 m. The “Casavells- Arrossars i cap a casa” route is 34 km long and flat. This gives you two different route profiles to choose from: a shorter, flat route and a longer cycling route with a stated elevation gain. For an initial choice, you can compare the distance and elevation profile directly.
Festivals and getting there
The Festa Major of Casavells and Matajudaica includes, among other things, a communal dinner and a concert in Casavells on Friday. If the festival is part of your trip planning, check the specific festival dates. The Marxa Popular de Casavells has a different focus: it is intended for walking and running and centers on the shared experience. Check the event details for the 2026 edition before travelling.
To get there, take the C-252 road from La Bisbal d’Empordà towards Figueres and Portbou. Casavells is 1.8 km from the start of this road, which begins at the road from Girona to Palamós. Discover more destinations:
