If you consider hiking, scenery and local history when choosing a destination, Aigües offers several specific points of interest. Pine forest, trails to viewpoints and historic buildings shape the town; local cuisine and festivals also offer insights into its traditions. Depending on whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or explore buildings and their history, you can focus your travel plans in different ways.

Hiking and Scenery around Aigües

La Pinada is a forest of Aleppo pines, where rosemary, lavender and thyme are part of the Mediterranean vegetation. The surroundings are ideal for walks with views of Alicante and Tabarca Island. Here, evergreen plants and views of the coast and island come together in the same landscape.

After a 1,975-meter ascent, the Camí de la Bacorera leads to Collado de Salmitre and continues to Alto del Cantal. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the coast. The route therefore leads to named points and ultimately to a viewpoint; this information can help you assess the route based on its course and destination.

The “Vuelta a Aigües” begins at the information board at the Casa de Cultura, leads to the Balneario and then continues to Aigües. By contrast, the “Aigües–Bussot” route starts at C/ Dr. Sapena and ends at the information board at the Casa de Cultura. The Camí de la Bacorera, the “Vuelta a Aigües” and the “Aigües–Bussot” route therefore have different described waypoints and destinations.

The west side of the Sierra de Cabeçó d'Or is also part of the landscape: there, a striking sequence of rocky walls gives the area a mineral character. The Victoria de Rojas recreation area has public toilets, a picnic area, a covered pavilion, tables, children's play equipment and a drinking water fountain. It therefore offers both facilities for a break and activities for children.

Buildings and History

The Balneario recalls the period when visitors came to Aigües for its healing waters. The present-day El Balneario building was constructed during its heyday in the early 20th century and is known as the Hotel Miramar. This combination of healing-water tradition and architectural history shapes the town's historical story, although the building alone does not indicate that a hotel is currently available.

La Torre was built at the end of the 14th century for defense and surveillance. The tower stands on a hill and offers views over the Bay of Alicante. Its location and views over the bay can be considered alongside its original purpose: it is both a historic building and a viewpoint.

The Church of San Francisco de Asís dates from 1755 and was rebuilt in the 19th century. Its bell tower dates from 1886 and houses a clock by Madrid clockmaker Antonio Canseco. The altarpiece also includes the canvas painting “San Francisco en la Porciúncula,” created in 1770. It consists of six fragments and was donated by the Marquesa del Bosch. The dates place different parts of the church in context: the building's origins were followed by its reconstruction and, later, the bell tower and its clock.

Culinary Traditions and Festivals

Aigües cuisine includes stews such as Olleta and Olleta borda, as well as rice dishes and gazpachos. Pickled vegetables, cocas, cured meats and minxos are also part of the local culinary tradition. These dishes offer a different way to experience the town alongside its hiking trails and buildings.

La Bacorera serves traditional cooking and uses fresh, 100% natural ingredients as well as local produce. If you would like to eat there, check the menu and opening arrangements before your trip. This information can help you plan a restaurant visit without making assumptions about a particular menu or opening hours.

The patron saint festivals in honor of the Virgen del Rosario, San Francisco de Asís and the Cristo de los Afligidos, as well as the Moors and Christians festivals, take place annually in the last week of August. The exact dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to include a festival in your trip, check the specific dates for your travel period.
