Alfafara
Accommodation in Alfafara
Alfafara combines routes in the Serra de Mariola with remarkable caves and historic buildings. If you are planning a trip to Alfafara, you can shape your days around whether you mainly want to hike, explore the architectural heritage or experience the patron saint festivities.
Hiking routes with different highlights
The “EL PANTANET – NECRÓPOLIS MAS DEL POU” route begins at a waterfall in a natural setting. It is listed as 4.78 kilometres long, with a low difficulty level and an effective walking time of one hour and 30 minutes. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
The “ALFAFARA – CABEÇÓ DE MARIOLA” route offers a different experience: it gains more than 500 metres in elevation in about an hour and offers views extending for several dozen kilometres. Along the route, information boards share details about the Iberians; visibility across the surrounding area can vary. The descriptions therefore highlight different aspects: the first route gives specific distance and effective walking time, while the second focuses on elevation gain, views and historical information. This lets you plan around each route’s distinctive features without assessing both hikes by the same criteria.
Caves and buildings in limestone
Cova de les Finestres consists of man-made troglodytic caves that were originally used as agricultural storage and working spaces. There are twelve chambers in total, carved into the rock, with a wooden staircase leading to them. Most are connected internally, forming chambers on several levels. This layout and the stacked rooms make the site particularly interesting as an architectural structure. Check the current safety condition of the wooden staircase before entering.
Molí Rupestre del Pantanet is integrated into the limestone of the ravine and is open to visitors. It is located in a cave near Barranc del Pantanet, beside a small waterfall. If you are planning a visit, check local access conditions in advance. The combination of cave, ravine and waterfall gives this place a different character from the multi-level chambers of Cova de les Finestres.
Local history and religious buildings
In the town centre, L’Esglèsia de la Transfiguració del Senyor stands next to the town hall. Built in the 18th century, it is a religious building of great heritage value to the local community. Its proximity to the town hall makes it a useful landmark when exploring the town centre.
Font de Dos Xorros is in the old town, next to the washhouse. Built in the early 19th century, it receives natural water from the spring at Cova de la Font. Water conditions can vary. Outside the town centre, Ermita de la Mare de Déu i Sant Antoni stands in a pine forest near the town. It is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its grounds include a recreational area suited to a day outdoors with the family.
Patron saint festivities in August
The Festes patronals d’Alfafara officially begin on 6 August and are designated a festival of tourist interest. On 7 August, the Divina Aurora is celebrated with a pre-dawn wake-up tradition: singing accompanies the early start, followed by a procession through the town streets. If the festivities are a reason for your trip, check the current programme in advance so you can plan around the scheduled dates.
The places described range from routes with specific walking-time and elevation details to caves, fountains and religious buildings. When planning your stay in Alfafara, you can first decide whether you would rather devote your time to hiking routes, local history or the festivities. Take local conditions into account when planning each day, and check the latest programme information for the patron saint festivities.
