Discover Beniarbeig through its architectural history, the Girona River and the routes around the town. Historic buildings and varied routes offer practical points of reference for planning your stay: they range from a circular route through agricultural countryside to a walking and cycling route that passes several named places.

Church, Bells and Historic Buildings

The Església de Sant Joan Baptista is a Baroque parish church dating from the late 18th century. The Parròquia’s bell inventory lists three bells; one of them, Sant Joan Baptista, was cast in 1741. The church also houses a Pietà, or a sculpture of the recumbent Christ, created in 1773 by the Valencian sculptor José Esteve i Bonet.

The history of public and community buildings also spans several distinct chapters. The former town hall was built in 1925, restored in 2005 and subsequently converted into the Centre Social. The Escoles Velles were built in 1931 with financial support from the Santonja family. The former boys’ school wing continues to serve as a meeting place for the Beniarbeig wind band.

The Casa Santonja estate consists of a group of Neo-Gothic buildings constructed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The estate includes the Ermita de la Casa Santonja, with a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The different periods represented—from the late Baroque church to the Neo-Gothic complex—give this architectural theme a clear historical span.

Townscape and Traces of Water Use

The Girona River shapes Beniarbeig’s urban layout. The traditional historic centre lies by the river and has a medieval street plan. Part of the old bridge has been preserved as a historic monument in the river park. Walks along the paths around Beniarbeig also reveal surviving waterworks, including basins, mills, irrigation channels, waterwheels and weirs. These examples connect the landscape with the history of water use without relying on a single structure or period.

The Ruta Històrica begins at Plaça 9 d’Octubre, where the current town hall and the municipal library are located. Along the way, it passes the Sant Joan Baptista church, Pont Vell, the Cava d’aigua and the Benihomer mill. These named stops provide landmarks along the historic route, while the medieval street plan and surviving buildings reveal different aspects of the townscape.

Routes and Seasonal Highlights

To compare the routes, start by considering their different formats. The Via Segura del Baix Girona begins at the Beniarbeig sports centre and runs through Ondara and El Verger to Els Poblets. It is 4.5 kilometres long and described as a walking and cycling route. By contrast, the SL-CV 158 Dels Racons circular walk passes through the municipality’s agricultural countryside and near the Gegant de Pedra, also known as Gegant Adormit, in the Serra de Segària. Check the route conditions before setting out.

Cova Bolumini brings together several archaeological themes: it was used as a dwelling and served as a burial place during the Early Bronze Age. Several painted lines of rock art appear on a natural column. A special seasonal phenomenon occurs around the summer solstice and for a few days before and after it: shortly after sunrise, sunlight enters the cave.

The recurring festivals also fall on different dates throughout the year. Festes de Sant Antoni are regularly celebrated on 26 January. Festes de Sant Domènec take place on the first weekend of August, and Festes de Sant Roc during the last week of August. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for your visit.
