In Daya Nueva, a landscape shaped by irrigation farming meets a rich historical heritage. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around different interests: the town’s architectural history and archaeology sit alongside agricultural landscapes and routes across the comarca. A museum and an annual literary competition are also among the area’s cultural highlights.

Huerta and Landscape

Daya Nueva is surrounded by a traditional irrigated landscape of huerta. Its main crops include citrus fruits, artichokes and potatoes; the fields and huertas in the area also include cereals. Its history is also shaped by the draining of marshes and marginal waterways. The combination of cultivation and irrigation gives the surroundings their agricultural character and offers a different perspective on the comarca from the town’s historic buildings.

Church and Archaeological Heritage

Today’s Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel originated as a small chapel dating back to the Christian Reconquista. In 1566, this old chapel began to perform full parish functions. The church was completely destroyed in the major earthquake of 21 March 1829 and subsequently rebuilt. Its architectural features include a hipped roof and distinctive blue glazed tiles.

The Pilar-Estela is also part of Daya Nueva’s historical heritage. Its remains are dated to the 5th or 4th century BC and are considered the richest example of Iberian funerary architecture in the province. The date when part of the funerary monument was found is a separate matter: in June 1992, a wall about 10 m long, belonging to the Pilar-Estela, was discovered by chance. The ancient dating of the monument and the much later discovery of the wall thus represent two distinct stages in its history.

Museo La Alquería and Events

The Museo La Alquería opened to the public in 2018. It is housed in a renovated former doctor’s residence in Daya Nueva. The collection was created through donations from local residents, giving it a distinctly community-based local character. The museum offers information in Spanish, Valencian and English, as well as extensive photographic and audiovisual material, a virtual tour, an events calendar and a selection of catalogued exhibits. As digital visitor resources may change, check the museum’s current programme before planning a visit.

The Certamen Literario Daya Nueva is held annually in September and marks the start of the patron saint festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the year you wish to visit.

Routes and Nature in the Comarca

One recommended route through the huerta is the Paraje Natural del Hondo. Access to its interior is available by prior appointment; check the current arrangements before your visit. There you can see a diverse variety of birds and fish, as well as extensive irrigation infrastructure that supplies parts of the Vega Baja and Campo de Elche.

Across the comarca, the huerta can be explored on foot or by bicycle via an extensive network of routes and paths. This is different from visiting the interior of El Hondo, which requires a prior appointment. If you have a particular route in mind, check its current conditions.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

The AP-7 between Alicante and Cartagena runs through the municipal area of Daya Nueva and provides good road connections towards Alicante, the airport and the coast. For specific journeys, check the relevant route conditions separately.

When looking for a hotel in Daya Nueva, it may help to match your travel plans to the town’s different highlights: architectural and museum history sit alongside agricultural landscapes and routes across the comarca. This allows you to choose your destination based on the subjects you would like to explore during your stay.
