Daya Vieja lies on a flat plain corresponding to the floodplain of the Vega. Green Huertas and an extensive network of irrigation canals surround the town and are considered evidence of its Arab origins. The town’s historic buildings and its agricultural landscape reveal different sides of Daya Vieja. If you’re looking for a hotel in Daya Vieja, you can plan your trip around whether you’re most interested in its cultural heritage, the Huerta or one of its recurring festival traditions.

Rollo, Columna and Plaza del León

Daya Vieja’s Rollo jurisdiccional is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and retains its original structure. The Columna del León is a Rollo jurisdiccional: a stone column rises from steps and is crowned by a symbol. It commemorates the founding of the seigneurial estate of Daya Vieja in 1791. This monument thus highlights both its distinctive columnar form and a specific chapter in the town’s history.

Plaza del León also combines historical references with a character of its own: Daya Vieja’s seigneurial past is represented there by the Columna del León and the coats of arms of the Counts and later Dukes of Pinohermoso, along with date palms. The square can therefore be understood not only through its monument, but also through the symbols of seigneurial rule and the palms that contribute to its described character.

Cultural Buildings and Church

The Centro cultural La Acequia was formerly a water supply building and was converted into a cultural center. It is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural and includes a library, a conference and multipurpose hall, and a projection room. The use of the rooms may change. The cultural center’s tower has been set up as a viewpoint.

The Iglesia Ntra. Sra. de Monserrate was newly built on the site of an earlier chapel and preserves some remains of the original place of worship. The church contains an image of the Virgin Mary by Manuel Ribera Girona. The Virgin’s crown was made by Talleres David de Valencia. Together, these details offer insight into the church’s building history and the specific works of art associated with it.

Huerta, Path and Viewpoint

The Camino Puente la Loza is a path through the Huerta where you can walk through typical agricultural landscapes. The Mirador del Palmeral offers a different perspective: it has a spiral design, features a tree and offers views across the Vega Baja del Segura. The experiences described are therefore clearly distinct: the Camino focuses on walking through the Huerta, while the Mirador offers a spiral viewing structure and views across the Vega.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The festivals in honor of Ntra. Sra. de Monserrate usually begin with the traditional Pasacalles de la Caña, accompanied by dulzaina and tamboril. They conclude on September 8 with a solemn procession followed by fireworks. The festivals also include sports competitions and traditional games such as Caliche and Pique. If you’re planning your trip around a festival, check the exact dates for your travel year; individual program details may vary.

The Romería de San Isidro takes place in May, around May 15. Carrying the image of the saint, the procession makes its way to the Huerta area of El Marco, where a day of communal festivities is held. Paella with rabbit, the dessert Almojábenas and Brazo de Gitano are traditionally eaten at the Romería. Unlike the September festival, this event offers a different time and focus: the journey to El Marco and the communal celebration there take center stage.

During Semana Santa, the processions particularly highlight the Santo Entierro on Holy Saturday; the images are carried on people’s shoulders. Another custom is La Salida del Niño: the procession visits every home in the town and enters them to bless them with the image of the Christ Child. Christmas carols and a trovero accompany it. Its verses usually refer to the homes being visited.
