Dénia brings together a range of travel interests: history, archaeology, nature, coastal views and culinary experiences. If you’re looking for hotels in Dénia, you can consider which of these themes matter most to you when choosing your destination. The castle’s architectural history, the topics covered by the Archaeological Museum and the landscape of Montgó Natural Park offer some specific points to consider.

History and archaeology in Dénia

The Castillo de Dénia dates back to the Islamic period between the 11th and 12th centuries. The complex includes Almohad construction phases, the Torre Roja and the Torre del Consell from the 15th century, as well as fortifications in the Renaissance style. The Palacio del Gobernador is also part of the site; it was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries under the patronage of the Duke of Lerma, Marquis of Dénia. The castle complex therefore brings together different architectural periods.

From Dénia Town Hall, you can walk to the castle via the steps on Calle Hospital and Cuesta Madre Amparo. From there, continue to Calle San Francisco, which leads to the castle. This route provides a specific guide to the streets mentioned, without specifying a walking time.

The Archaeological Museum is housed in the historic Casa de la Marquesa de Valero de Palma and traces Dénia’s development from its beginnings through to the 18th century. It complements the architectural history of the castle with a broader historical perspective. Another archaeological site is Cova Catxupa: the rock shelter is about 6,000 years old and dates from the Neolithic period. Its paintings depict archers, hunters, goats and deer. They are part of Levantine rock art, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

Landscape, routes and activities

Montgó Natural Park stretches between Dénia and Jávea. It covers more than 2,000 hectares and is home to more than 650 flora and fauna species. The Vía Verde de Dénia follows the former Carcaixent–Dénia FEVE railway line, passing through orange groves and running parallel to the coast, north of the historic town. The former railway route and the landscape along it give this trail its own character.

One route in Dénia runs along the sea and offers coastal views. At Cova Tallada, you can swim, snorkel and kayak. These places and activities offer different points of focus: when planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the landscape, coastal views or activities on the water.

Culinary and cultural themes

The international creative cuisine competition featuring Dénia red prawns welcomes more than 50 chefs from around the world each year. Exact dates may vary; if the competition is important to your trip, check the current event dates when planning.

The Moros y Cristianos festival is another cultural highlight of Dénia. It has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Autonómico of the Valencian Community. Find hotels in Dénia for your stay.
