Formentera Del Segura can be explored through three themes: the traditional huerta, the Río Segura, and the history of the church and mill. When planning your trip, it is also important to consider when places are accessible and under what conditions. Iglesia Parroquial La Purísima can be visited outside service times, while Ermita de San Roque opens in mid-August for the Romería. The municipal schedule determines the mill programme.

Huerta, river and sotos

The Río Segura runs south of Formentera de Segura; most of the traditional huerta lies north of the town centre. An extensive network of rural paths runs through the huerta, which serves not only for agriculture but also for recreation and leisure. The municipality’s cuisine is also based on produce from the huerta. As a result, this landscape shapes the municipality’s culinary character as well as its agriculture.

The Soto del Río consists of former meanders of the Río Segura that have been converted into wooded recreational areas with extensive tree cover. The sotos along the river south of Formentera de Segura are used by residents for walks. This shows how the rural character is reflected not only in agriculture, but also in the recreational use of the huerta and the sotos as places for residents to walk.

Church and mill: local history

Iglesia Parroquial La Purísima was completed in 1840, following the earthquakes of 1829. You can visit the church outside service times; arrangements for religious access may change. If you are planning a visit, it is therefore advisable to check the local visiting hours.

The Molino hidráulico harinero in Formentera de Segura has been documented since the late 18th century. The mill retains its original machinery and the miller’s living quarters. This historic site thus highlights both the technical aspects of milling and the living area. During your visit, you can experience milling and sifting in practice and take home freshly produced flour. The visit programme follows the municipal schedule, so check the planned date in advance.

Visiting information and seasonal dates

Access at Paraje natural El Molino has been adapted for people with reduced mobility; there is also a children’s playground. As visitor facilities may change, it is advisable to confirm the current condition of the access and playground locally before your visit.

The municipality’s major traditional festivals include the mid-year festival in February, the May festivities in honour of the patron saint Inmaculada Concepción, and the August patron saint festivities in honour of San Miguel and San Roque. The annual programme may change. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the exact dates in advance.

Ermita de San Roque remains closed throughout the year and opens in mid-August for the Romería in honour of San Roque. Unlike the church, which can be visited outside service times, access to the ermita is tied to this seasonal occasion. The dates of the Romería may also vary.
