When looking for a hotel in Torre La Mata, you can first decide what you would like to focus on during your trip: Playa de La Mata is all about the beach, Torre de La Mata offers coastal history, and Molino del Agua and the nature park’s lagoons add a natural dimension.

Beach and Access

Playa de La Mata, also known as Torrelamata, stretches for about 2,365 metres and is the longest beach in the municipality of Torrevieja. Its length and ranking show where it stands within the municipality and give you a concrete point of reference if the coast is a focus of your trip. The beach has an adapted area that enables people to access it regardless of their mobility. If this is relevant to your plans, note that the access option applies to the adapted area. The length of the beach and adapted access are two different criteria: one describes the extent of the beach, while the other refers to a specific access option.

Coastal History and Architecture

Torre de La Mata was part of the system for monitoring and defending the coast. It also served as a control point to protect the salt flats and the former landing place used for loading salt and other goods. Its historical role can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: as part of the coastal defences and in connection with the transport of salt and goods.

The tower has a circular floor plan and was built of masonry. It is based on the model of defensive towers built between the 15th and 16th centuries. These details combine a description of the structure with its historical function: alongside its role in the defence system, they also give a sense of its architectural type.

Trails and Nature

The Senda Peatonal de La Mata provides a dedicated walking route. It connects the centre of La Mata with Parque Molino del Agua and has adapted sections. When planning a walk, you can take both endpoints and these sections into account.

The Molino del Agua natural area in La Mata preserves one of the last dune systems on the coast of Alicante province. It was protected in 2006, covers 17 hectares and features a landscape of ecological value. The preserved dune system is the area’s specific natural highlight.

The Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Nature Park comprises two ecologically important salt lagoons: Laguna de Torrevieja, also known as the Pink Lagoon, and Laguna de La Mata. Together, they form an internationally renowned wetland. In the Laguna de La Mata section, there are marked trails and viewpoints where visitors can observe the rich variety of wildlife and plant life. This natural highlight differs from the Molino del Agua dune system: here, the focus is on the salt lagoons and observing nature.
