Monóvar offers several clear themes to help you plan your trip: local history and architecture, a smartphone walking tour, the landscape of Monte Coto, and wine. Which aspect you focus on depends on whether you are most interested in cultural sites, nature and hiking, or wine tourism. The Azorín Route complements visits to local sites with a self-guided walking tour; Monte Coto adds biodiversity and hiking trails.

Local history and architecture

The Museo de Artes y Oficios de Monóvar preserves an ethnological collection that documents the transition from traditional societies to the globalized world from a local perspective. Social change is therefore at the heart of the museum’s subject matter. The Torre del Rellotge was built in 1743, houses the town clock and bells, and stands 18 metres tall.

The Ermita de Santa Bárbara offers a distinctive architectural focus of its own: this 18th-century building follows the Valencian Baroque style and shows clear influences of the Italian Baroque and Neoclassicism. Today, the ermita is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Fondó air-raid shelter was built in 1938 and now houses a permanent exhibition featuring drawings by children from the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and the Syrian War. As the exhibition’s status may change, check whether it is open to visitors before your visit.

Walking tour and hiking trails

The Azorín Route is an approximately one-hour walking tour through Monóvar that you can follow independently using your smartphone. It includes seven different stops. As the route may be subject to local updates, check the latest information before setting out.

More than 100 bird species live in the Paraje Natural Municipal Monte Coto, which is also home to around 700 plant species. These include the Valencian oak (Quercus faginea) in the Barranco de la Quitranera. Mountain activities such as climbing and hiking take place in the area. Several connected hiking trails include the PRV-166 Almorquí-Cavafría-Tres Fuentes, the PRV-3 Pinoso-Los Tres Fuentes-Pinoso and the long-distance GR-7.

Separately, the municipal hiking guide lists 19 routes. These include the officially waymarked trails PRV-107 “Ruta del Xirivell” and PRV-177 “Sierra del Reclot”, both of which run entirely through the municipality of Monóvar. The information about Monte Coto describes connected trails and their designations; the municipal hiking guide also gives a total number and details two officially waymarked routes that run through the municipality. Routes and conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Wine and events

Monóvar is a founding member of the Ruta del Vino de Alicante. The visitor offering at Bodegas Alejandro in Manya, Monóvar, includes wine tourism, guided tours and a shop. As visitor services may change, check their availability before visiting.

One event weekend transforms the town into a medieval scene with a large arts, crafts and food market; another weekend hosts a major cultural fair. Dates and programmes may vary, so it is advisable to check the dates for your travel period. This lets you consider the historic sites, hiking trails and wine as different focuses for planning your trip.
