Mutxamel brings together traces of its history, irrigation heritage and a distinctive local festival and food culture. Churches, historic town centres and themed routes offer a range of perspectives. When planning your stay, consider which themes you would most like it to focus on.

Churches, Local History and Gardens

The Iglesia El Salvador is Mutxamel’s most important religious building. Construction began on 16 February 1513; it was not completed until about a century later. The attached Gothic tower dates from the 15th century. Today it serves as a bell tower; in the past, it protected the population from pirate attacks. It stands 23.5 metres tall.

Ravalet, Mutxamel’s first town centre, offers another glimpse into the town’s history. The houses arranged around a square, the narrow streets, and the roofs and façades point to an Arab origin. Here, the focus is on the layout of the town centre, while the Iglesia El Salvador—with its construction history and tower—offers a different historical perspective.

The gardens of Peñacerrada offer another distinctive feature: the Jardines de Peñacerrada combine French, English and Italian styles. The palace and gardens were entered in the first section of the General Inventory of Valencian Cultural Heritage on 24 January 2008 and classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Historic Garden category. BIC stands for Bien de Interés Cultural; the Azudes de Mutxamel and de Sant Joan also have this classification, in the Monument category.

Irrigation Heritage and Themed Routes

Irrigation features in several of the cultural attractions described here. At the Centro de Interpretación Les Fontetes, you can learn about the traditional irrigation system of the Huerta de Alicante; the centre also explains how the weir works and its significance. Two local hiking trails and the Camins d’aigua route start from there. The centre’s opening arrangements may change, and route access conditions should also be checked locally.

The Ruta turística Mutxamel histórico follows the former Acequia mayor. It provides information about the Huerta de Alicante’s irrigation system, its weir towers and traditional house types, as well as notable people who were born or lived in Mutxamel. The Ruta turística Arcadi Blasco has a different focus: the walk takes you through Mutxamel to important places connected with the artist’s life and work, including the Fuente de la Torre Vigía. One route centres on the town’s history and irrigation, while the other focuses on the life and work of Arcadi Blasco.

The Ruta Assut Nou – El Cantalar links water-related heritage sites along the Rio Seco. The features included are the Azud de Sant Joan and the Acequia del Gualeró. It complements the routes focused on the Huerta de Alicante and local history with a further look at water-related heritage.

Nature and Activities

Bec de l’Aguila lies in the north-eastern part of the municipality. An order issued by the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente of the Generalitat Valenciana on 4 May 1999 designated the area a Microrreserva de Flora. Bec de l’Aguila is also a recreational area for hiking and cycling. Check access conditions locally before travelling.

Festivals and Cuisine in Mutxamel

The Moros y Cristianos festivals have been celebrated for more than 150 years and take place from 7 to 12 September. In November 2020, the Generalitat Valenciana recognised them as a festival of regional tourist interest. The festivities in honour of San Antonio Abad are held on Calle El Salvador and have been documented since the 18th century. They include bonfires, horses, a procession and the blessing of the traditional Bollito, as well as an open-air Mass, music, dancing and raffles; the annual programme may vary.

Local cuisine also offers plenty to discover: tomatoes of the Muchamiel variety, broad beans, Mutxamel bread baked in a wood-fired oven and pastries are part of the town’s gastronomic identity. The Jornadas de la cuchara take place every March. Participating restaurants offer menus featuring traditional stews from Mutxamel’s cuisine. Dates and participating restaurants may change; check the details before planning your visit around them.
