Discover Arañuel

Arañuel offers several ways to experience the area: hiking trails wind through forests and lead to viewpoints overlooking the Mijares Valley, while the Río Mijares, with its meanders and river beaches, offers a different perspective on the landscape. There is also a designated bathing area by the river and sights in the town center. When planning your visit, you can choose between a specific hiking route, the river landscape and the townscape.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

One clearly defined trail is the SL-CV 177. It starts at the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel on the CV-20 road in Arañuel and leads through pine and holm oak forests to the Rosaire heights. Along the way, it offers sweeping views of the Mijares Valley and Mount Campero. At 2.30 kilometers, the route is short and follows a one-way linear course; the distance therefore does not describe a circular hike.

Arañuel also has signposted local hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The accessible Vuelta al Mijares route loops around the Mijares and passes by Fuente Seguer. The SL-CV 96 offers a different kind of route: it passes through the northern or northwestern part of the municipality, along paths and tracks, through lush vegetation and the forests typical of Alto Mijares. On its southern or southwestern side, it borders the summit of Magraile. Check the trail markings and maintenance condition before hiking this route. The SL-CV 95, known as the “Balcón del Millars,” has been developed or upgraded in Arañuel for its viewpoints over the Mijares Valley.

River Landscape and Nearby Destinations

Those looking to focus on the Río Mijares will find meanders and river beaches in the surrounding area. El Pozo is a designated bathing area on the river near Arañuel. The Ermita de San Roque is also nearby and makes a worthwhile destination for a visit and to enjoy the landscape. Alongside the hiking trails, visitors can therefore choose a named bathing area and an excursion into the countryside.

Church and Townscape

The public washhouse is one of the sights in the town center. The Iglesia de San Miguel is located on Plaza Mayor and is classified as a “Bien de relevancia local,” meaning a local asset of cultural significance. It is a simple 17th-century neoclassical building with features of the Corinthian order. The church’s location in the town center is thus complemented by a specific architectural classification.

Another point of interest is Arañuel’s traditional rural houses. These include buildings with large gates, tiled roofs, one or two floors, and attics. In the past, these attic spaces were used to dry produce. These features describe both the houses’ exterior form and a historical aspect of everyday life. Together with the church and public washhouse, they add further elements of the townscape to the hiking and river landscapes.

For a hike with a named route, the SL-CV 177 offers a specific distance and a clearly defined course; the other signposted local trails vary in length and difficulty. Those who would rather focus on the river can explore the meanders, river beaches and El Pozo as different aspects of the surrounding area. The church, washhouse and rural houses offer another focus: the townscape and its architectural styles.
