If you’re looking for a hotel in Artana, the area’s highlights can help you decide what you want your stay to focus on: trails through the landscape, historic sites or traditional dishes. Artana is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park. In and around the town, you’ll encounter both natural and mining history, as well as evidence from different periods.

Landscape and hiking trails around Artana

Les Penyes Aragoneses, also locally known as Penyes Altes, are large Ródeno rock formations in the heart of the Sierra Espadán. They are five kilometres from the municipality of Artana. This gives them a distinct connection to the landscape alongside the town’s attractions. Artana has more than fifteen routes of varying difficulty for hikers, catering to both mountain hikers and families.

The Rebó y La Solana route starts at the entrance to Artana and passes the La Solana spring on its way to the Ermita Santa Cristina. The round trip is approximately seven kilometres. Those who want to compare its length with another described route can look to Les Mines de la Font de Ferro, which has a total distance of 9.22 kilometres. The route includes three main openings of the iron mines. Iron was mined there more than fifty years ago, so the trail combines a specific distance with a glimpse into the area’s former use.

La Cova del Tronc offers a different experience. From there, you can enjoy views of La Plana; beyond the first traversable gallery, a rope safety system is required. This condition is important to bear in mind when considering the cave and planning a visit. The Ermita Santa Cristina is two kilometres from Artana, in a valley with cypress, pine and olive trees, beside the Rambla. Its surroundings and the Rebó y La Solana route can thus be considered two aspects of the same excursion destination, without conflating their stated distances.

Old town, chapels and historic landmarks

The old town is considered the oldest part of the settlement. Its character is shaped by narrow streets of Muslim origin, numerous tiled religious panels, and a variety of Modernist and vernacular façades. A Via Crucis begins in the Pardinal neighbourhood, with stations leading to the Ermita del Cristo del Calvario. This route through the town also offers a way to explore its religious heritage.

Outside Artana stands the Ermita Santa Cristina, built in the Doric style in the 18th century. It is dedicated to Santa Cristina, Artana’s patron saint. The Castillo de Artana survives as a ruin and is considered an Islamic fortress with Roman origins and medieval alterations. Together, these buildings point to different historical layers without needing to be attributed to a single period.

The parish church and parish museum also preserve noteworthy artefacts. Artana’s parish church was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of an earlier temple; the original medieval mosque was very likely located there. The church houses the 1862 painting “Degollación de San Juan Bautista”. It is by Bernardo Mondina Milallave, a painter from Castellón, and is considered one of his outstanding paintings. The parish museum contains a Muslim gravestone bearing the inscription: “This stone was erected by the brave Alí Zobei. God is Allah and Mohammed is his prophet.”

Typical dishes from Artana

The local cuisine offers further clues when choosing your destination. Cassoleta is a typical dish made with potatoes, lamb, red pepper and pine nuts. Les orelletes are typical fried pastries made with eggs, anise, extra virgin olive oil and wheat flour; they are often served with honey. L’Olla de dijuni is a fasting dish made with garden vegetables, including chard, as well as chickpeas. The three dishes differ in their ingredients and character: from a lamb dish to pastries served sweet, and a dish made with vegetables and legumes.

The routes described vary in both length and features, while the cultural heritage is spread across the old town, church, museum and chapels.
