Cabanes offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: wetlands and birdwatching, mountain biking routes, paths to the coast and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Cabanes, you can first consider which of these you would like to shape your stay. The area’s natural and cultural heritage gives you specific points to help you decide.

Nature Parks and Birdwatching

The municipality includes the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park and the Desert de les Palmes Nature Park. Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca is included on the list of wetlands of international importance and is considered the most important wetland in the province of Castelló. Birdwatching is possible in the nature park—a clear focus for anyone who wants to include wetlands and birds in their travel plans.

The Desert de les Palmes offers a different landscape: the nature park is a coastal mountain range. Its highest point, El Bartolo, is 729 metres high. This means two distinct natural landscapes sit side by side within the municipality: the wetland of Prat and the mountains of the Desert de les Palmes.

Routes with Different Highlights

For mountain biking, Cabanes has more than 100 kilometres of MTB routes, spread across five trails. Separate from the MTB routes, the SLC1 circular route starts at Plaça dels Hostals in Cabanes. It is 5.7 kilometres long and rated very easy. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Another route leads from Torre la Sal, Cabanes’s coastal settlement, to the beaches of the neighbouring municipality of Torreblanca, on foot or by bicycle. The planning details therefore differ considerably: for the SLC1, the starting point, length and difficulty are given; for the coastal route, the starting point, possible ways of getting around and destination are the main details.

Archaeology and Architectural History

Torre la Sal was built in the 16th century as a coastal watchtower and defensive tower. In 2002, it was declared a Cultural Asset of Special Interest, a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The Roman Arch of Cabanes stands beside the Via Augusta and is one of the most important Roman monuments in Valencian archaeological heritage.

An earlier period of history is associated with the Iberian settlement of Mortórum, which dates from the 7th to the 1st century BC. The fortified Hermitage of Albalat, by contrast, was built at the end of the 13th century and converted into a fortified church in the 14th and 15th centuries in response to incursions from the sea.

Its architecture makes its defensive character clear: the hermitage has raised walls, a crenellated terrace and an outer apse that was converted into a watchtower. The historic gates also provide a specific point of reference: of the gates that protected Cabanes, only the Sitjar Gate remains. Another route leads to the remains of a fortress of Muslim origin.

Visitor Information and Local Visits

To reach the visitor centre of the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park, travel from Ribera de Cabanes via a turn-off near kilometre 1000 of the N-340, heading towards the Torre de la Sal Aquaculture Institute. Check the road conditions and the centre’s opening information before travelling.

Tourist Info Cabanes-Torre la Sal provides tourist information and visitor assistance for the municipality and the Valencian Community. As opening hours vary by season, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

A winery in the town centre can also be visited by appointment. The winery’s upper floor serves as a multipurpose room for events, tastings and presentations. For your travel planning, arranging an appointment is essential.
